Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ 4K Release Reportedly Won’t Give Fans the Full IMAX Experience, and Here’s Why

Home video releases for Christopher Nolan films have always carried a bit of extra scrutiny, largely because of how deliberately the director designs his movies around theatrical presentation. Given his well-documented devotion to film photography and premium formats, every technical detail of his UHD releases tends to spark genuine debate among cinephiles.

That conversation has now shifted toward his latest epic. ‘The Odyssey,’ Nolan’s mythological drama that became the first feature ever shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, is heading to home video this November, and early specifications have already sparked discussion about how faithfully the disc will replicate its theatrical presentation.

According to reporting from FlatpanelsHD, the film’s upcoming 4K UHD release will use a 1.78:1 aspect ratio rather than the full 1.43:1 format used in IMAX 70mm theatrical presentations. Rather than replicating that original taller frame, the home release will instead land closer to the 1.90:1 ratio commonly used in standard IMAX theaters, essentially delivering what’s being described as an “IMAX Enhanced” experience for television viewing.

That distinction matters significantly given how varied the film’s theatrical presentation already was depending on venue. While IMAX 70mm locations could project the complete 1.43:1 frame, other theaters showed the film in formats ranging from 1.90:1 to 2.39:1, meaning even audiences who saw ‘The Odyssey’ theatrically didn’t necessarily experience identical framing.

The practical reason behind this decision comes down to basic television geometry. Since no consumer television exists with an aspect ratio matching full-frame IMAX’s 1.43:1, presenting the film in that format at home would require significant black bars running down each side of the screen, something studios have generally tried to avoid on standard home releases.

According to a preliminary listing on Blu-ray.com, the release will arrive as a three-disc package featuring native 4K video, HDR10, and a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, running roughly 172 minutes. Notably absent from that listing are Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, or DTS:X options, though Universal has not yet finalized official specifications for the release.

This isn’t the first time Nolan and Universal have navigated this particular challenge. His 2023 film ‘Oppenheimer,’ which combined IMAX and standard 65mm photography, ultimately used a variable aspect ratio approach on its own 4K release, shifting between 2.20:1 and 1.78:1 depending on the scene. Since ‘The Odyssey’ was shot entirely on IMAX film rather than mixing formats, it remains unclear whether its home release will maintain a consistent 1.78:1 ratio throughout or similarly vary depending on the sequence.

The 4K UHD and digital release is currently set for November 17, arriving exactly four months after the film’s July 17 theatrical debut, with both formats reportedly launching simultaneously. That release timing follows what’s being described as an unusually long exclusive theatrical window by current industry standards, reflecting Nolan’s well-known preference for prioritizing cinema exhibition.

Given the film’s massive box office success, having already grossed well over a billion dollars worldwide and become both Nolan’s highest-grossing film and the top-performing IMAX release ever, this home video release carries considerably more weight than a typical studio catalog title. For fans eager to revisit the film’s sweeping visuals at home, the coming months should bring further clarity on exactly how faithfully that IMAX experience translates to the small screen.
