‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Star Frankie Muniz Just Won His First Major Pro Race, and His Victory Speech Will Break Your Heart
Child stars rarely get to walk away from Hollywood entirely, let alone build a completely different career from scratch. But that’s exactly the path Frankie Muniz chose after years in the spotlight, trading sitcom sets for racetracks in pursuit of a dream that had nothing to do with acting.
Best known for playing the title character on ‘Malcolm in the Middle,’ Muniz spent his childhood as one of the most recognizable faces on television before quietly stepping away to chase a career in professional motorsports. That transition hasn’t been easy, with years of grinding through lower-tier series while balancing occasional returns to acting just to help fund his racing ambitions.
Now, after roughly two decades of pursuing that goal, Muniz has finally broken through with his first major professional racing victory. Driving a Ford Mustang for TechSport Racing alongside co-driver Tyler Stone, Muniz earned the win in the GT4 America Series’ Am class during a race at Road America.
The moment proved overwhelming for the actor-turned-driver, who was visibly emotional in the aftermath of the victory. “I’m emotional because I’ve honestly had two of the worst weeks of my entire life, to be honest,” Muniz said in his post-race interview with Motorsport.com. “I came here, really low. Had a good day yesterday, and felt really good today so to get this win is just — Thank you God, my team, Ford. This is unbelievable. I feel so incredible.”
He didn’t stop there, making sure to credit his co-driver for helping seal the win. “I’m so excited for Tyler, he drove so good. This is amazing,” Muniz added, still visibly emotional as the reality of the moment set in.
The victory adds a meaningful milestone to what has otherwise been a long and often difficult climb through the motorsports ranks. Muniz has spent recent seasons competing full-time in NASCAR’s Craftsman Truck Series for Team Reaume, while also contesting the GT4 America championship on the side, a demanding dual schedule for any driver, let alone one who spent his formative years on a soundstage instead of a racetrack.
His racing résumé stretches back further than many fans might realize, including stints in the ARCA Menards Series, ARCA Menards Series East and West, and even NASCAR’s Xfinity-adjacent O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. Despite years of competitive starts across multiple series, a marquee win had remained elusive until this moment at Road America.
Muniz has never shied away from discussing just how difficult the road to professional racing has been, often balancing acting work, including a return to his most famous role, with the demands of a full racing schedule. That juggling act has made moments like this one feel especially earned rather than handed to him.
The win also arrives at a moment when Muniz has increasingly been recognized within the racing world on his own terms, rather than simply as a former child star trying his hand at a new hobby. Competing consistently across multiple national series over the years has slowly built him credibility among fans and competitors alike.
