‘The Odyssey’ Just Crossed a Box Office Milestone That Cements Its Place in Nolan History

Christopher Nolan has spent the better part of two decades proving that ambitious, star-studded filmmaking can still draw massive crowds to theaters, but even by his standards, this summer has been extraordinary. His latest release has spent weeks defying typical box office trends, holding onto audiences with a staying power that few modern blockbusters manage to replicate.

That film is ‘The Odyssey,’ Nolan’s sprawling, nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic poem, led by Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside a stacked ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o and Robert Pattinson. Shot entirely on IMAX film cameras and carrying an R rating, the film seemed like an unconventional bet for a summer tentpole, yet it has consistently outperformed expectations since its July 17 debut.

That momentum has now pushed the film past another significant benchmark. According to updated estimates, ‘The Odyssey’ has crossed the $550 million mark domestically, pulling in an additional $3.74 million on Friday from 2,617 locations, a 27% dip from the previous Friday that still speaks to the film’s unusually strong legs. The film’s total domestic gross now stands at approximately $553.26 million.

That kind of sustained performance places ‘The Odyssey’ in rare company within Nolan’s own filmography. Prior to this run, only one other Nolan movie, 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight,’ had ever crossed the $535 million domestic threshold, making this latest milestone a genuine career achievement for the director.

The film’s opening alone signaled it was headed somewhere special, launching to $123.5 million domestically and $263.7 million worldwide, the biggest global opening of Nolan’s career at the time. Audience data also suggested the film was resonating well beyond older moviegoers typically drawn to a Greek epic, with roughly half of ticket buyers falling between eighteen and thirty-four years old.

‘The Odyssey’ has also become a genuine phenomenon in IMAX, as the first feature ever shot entirely using the format’s specialized cameras. It became IMAX’s second-fastest film to reach $100 million in ticket sales, clearing that mark in just ten days and eventually pulling ahead of the IMAX totals from Nolan’s own ‘Oppenheimer.’

Globally, the film’s numbers have been just as staggering. ‘The Odyssey’ has already crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, officially becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever and surpassing 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ It now ranks as the second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time behind ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ while also standing as the top R-rated release of the year both domestically and internationally.

Universal’s Jim Orr, President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, credited the film’s success to the trust Nolan has built with audiences over the course of his career. The film’s steady, gradual climb rather than a front-loaded opening weekend has become one of its defining traits, allowing it to keep adding tens of millions of dollars even a month and a half into its theatrical run.

With competition from other major summer releases continuing to fill multiplexes, ‘The Odyssey’s’ ability to maintain this level of consistency speaks to just how firmly it has captured audience attention. Whether it can keep climbing toward the all-time domestic top twenty remains to be seen, but its current trajectory suggests Nolan’s Greek epic is far from finished making history.
