Dave Franco Is Officially Coming Back for ‘The Studio’ Season 2
Few shows have managed to turn celebrity cameos into a genuine art form quite like Apple TV+’s ‘The Studio.‘ Created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the satirical comedy has built its reputation on stacking each episode with surprise Hollywood appearances, using real industry faces to skewer the very system they work within.
None of those cameos landed quite as memorably as Dave Franco’s extended, scene-stealing turn during the show’s chaotic two-part Season 1 finale. Playing a wildly exaggerated, mushroom-fueled version of himself at a CinemaCon party gone sideways, Franco’s performance earned him an Emmy nomination and instantly became one of the most talked-about moments of the entire season.
Now, with Season 2 already deep into production, speaking to journalist Joshua Horowitz Franco confirmed he will officially return for the show’s next chapter, putting months of fan speculation to rest. The news comes as welcome confirmation for viewers who spent Season 1 hoping Franco’s chaotic energy wasn’t a one-time appearance.
Franco himself has made his enthusiasm for returning abundantly clear in the time since. Speaking with Gold Derby, the actor made it plain he’d be back no matter what the story required of him. “I want to come back for 10 seasons,” Franco said. “I hope they make this forever and they know I’m there whenever they need me. I don’t need to read the script. Just tell me where to be.”
That kind of open-ended commitment fits the unusual creative relationship Franco has built with Rogen and Goldberg since joining the show. According to Rogen, Franco’s role wasn’t written as an afterthought but crafted specifically with the actor in mind, built around the idea of surprising audiences by first showing him in a serious, dramatic register before letting him unravel into total chaos later in the season.
Franco has previously described the appeal of playing an exaggerated version of himself as uniquely freeing compared to more traditional acting work. He’s explained that stepping into a heightened, self-parodying persona let him lean fully into absurdity without the usual constraints of character work, something he’s said made the experience one of the most fun of his career.
Franco’s Season 1 arc began modestly, with a small role in “Alphabet City,” a fictional Ron Howard project featured within the show, before expanding into a much larger presence during the finale’s CinemaCon sequence. That two-part finale saw Franco’s character spiral through a hallucinogenic haze alongside Zoë Kravitz’s equally overwhelmed character, all while the rest of the Continental Studios team scrambled to save the company from a looming acquisition.
The gamble paid off in a major way, turning what started as a supporting cameo into one of the most memorable comedic performances of the year and helping cement ‘The Studio’ as one of the buzziest shows on Apple TV+. With filming on Season 2 confirmed to have kicked off earlier this year, Franco’s returning presence suggests the show intends to keep leaning into the guest-star chaos that made its freshman season such a standout.
