‘Lanterns’ Fans Finally Get the Green Lantern Suit Reveal They’ve Been Waiting Months for as HBO Shares New Look at Hal Jordan

HBO’s slow-burn approach to unveiling its next DCU series has tested fans’ patience for the better part of a year now. Between vague set photos, deliberately obscured trailers and a costume tease that only deepened the mystery, ‘Lanterns‘ has kept its central image, the actual superhero in his suit, under wraps for longer than almost any recent superhero project.

That series follows Kyle Chandler’s veteran Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s rookie John Stewart as two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the American heartland. Framed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn as an earthbound mystery in the spirit of HBO’s ‘True Detective,’ the show has leaned into grounded, grittier storytelling rather than the more colorful tone typical of past Green Lantern adaptations.

Now new photos have surfaced showing Chandler fully suited up as Hal Jordan, giving fans their clearest look yet at the character in action. The images show Chandler in the Green Lantern armor standing outside what appears to be a residential doorway, continuing the show’s grounded, procedural aesthetic even in a moment featuring full superhero gear.

That reveal comes after months of visual teasing that frustrated segments of the fanbase. Earlier trailers showed the suit hanging on a rack in muted brown tones rather than the character’s signature vibrant green, sparking online debate over whether the costume had strayed too far from the comics. It later became clear the muted colors reflected an aged, weathered version of the suit befitting Hal’s status as a seasoned veteran nearing retirement within the show’s story.

According to Chandler, the suit almost didn’t make it into the series at all. Speaking about the costume’s uncertain path to the screen, Chandler explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live that the production team debated for a long time whether Hal would wear a Green Lantern suit in the show at all, before ultimately deciding late in the process to include it.

That last-minute decision speaks to just how differently ‘Lanterns’ has approached its source material compared to prior big-screen attempts. Rather than centering the show around suit reveals and cosmic spectacle, the series has prioritized its buddy-cop mystery structure, with Hal training Stewart as his eventual successor while both investigate a case tying into the broader DCU.

The show’s debut episode reportedly opens with archival-style footage establishing Hal Jordan as Earth’s first Green Lantern, introducing the suit through an in-universe television interview rather than a traditional action sequence. That framing device has helped ease some of the earlier fan skepticism, offering the character’s most polished on-screen look since the show’s marketing campaign began.

With ‘Lanterns’ now several episodes into its run on HBO Max following its August 16 premiere, these latest suit photos mark one more step in the show’s gradual reveal strategy, giving fans a fuller picture of a costume that generated plenty of debate long before viewers ever saw it in motion.
