Tenoch Huerta Finally Escapes the Speedo for Namor’s New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Look

Superhero costume debates have become their own strange subgenre of pop culture commentary, with fans dissecting every stitch of fabric long before a film even hits theaters. Few Marvel characters have generated quite as much conversation around their wardrobe as Namor, whose skin-baring introduction in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ turned into one of the more talked-about design choices of that entire film.

Tenoch Huerta first brought the underwater monarch to life back in 2022, earning a rare “introducing” credit for a role that leaned heavily into the character’s comic-accurate, barely-there costuming. That look, complete with green trunks and minimal upper-body coverage, became as much a topic of fan discussion as Namor’s actual storyline within the film.

Now, with Huerta returning to the role for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the actor has confirmed that Namor’s aesthetic has undergone a significant transformation, one he’s clearly relieved about. Speaking about the character’s new costume, Huerta made it clear the wardrobe department opted for a far more elaborate design this time around, trading the revealing look for detailed, armor-heavy Mesoamerican-inspired regalia.

“It was so cool to not be in the speedos,” Huerta said, according to IMDb. “Thank you Russo Brothers.”

The updated design, visible in newly shared images, swaps the character’s minimal original costume for layered gold and turquoise jewelry, an elaborate feathered headpiece and a jade earring, alongside a decorated spear, giving Namor a distinctly regal, ceremonial appearance befitting his status as Talokan’s ruler.

Huerta’s return marks his first appearance as Namor since his 2022 debut, and the actor has described the experience of stepping back into the character as notably different this time around, given the sheer scale of ‘Doomsday’s’ ensemble cast. He’s previously explained that with more than twenty significant characters populating the film, his own screen time is comparatively smaller and simpler than his central antagonist role in ‘Wakanda Forever.’

Despite that reduced runtime, Huerta has teased that Namor’s presence still carries weight within the film’s larger narrative, hinting at consequences tied to Doctor Doom’s actions even without the two characters sharing direct scenes together. He’s also suggested potential interactions with Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, praising his ‘Doomsday’ co-star while keeping specific plot details close to the chest.

The costume overhaul fits into a broader pattern across ‘Avengers: Doomsday’s’ marketing rollout, which has spent months revealing updated, comic-accurate designs for several returning and newly introduced characters ahead of the film’s massive crossover event. For Huerta, the wardrobe change appears to be a welcome one, letting him focus on the character’s regal authority rather than the online chatter that once accompanied his original costume.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters December 18, bringing together heroes and villains from across the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men for what’s shaping up to be one of Marvel’s largest ensemble films yet.
