James Gunn Just Gave the Most Cryptic Answer Yet About ‘Peacemaker’ Season 3

Nearly a year has passed since ‘Peacemaker‘ Season 2 wrapped up with one of the more emotionally loaded finales in the DC Universe’s television lineup, and fans have spent much of that time waiting anxiously for any sign of what comes next. With the show’s biggest cliffhangers still unresolved, speculation about a possible third season has never fully gone away.

That speculation traces back to the Season 2 finale, “Full Nelson,” which left Chris Smith, John Cena’s title character, in genuinely dire straits. Rather than a triumphant send-off, the episode ended with Peacemaker imprisoned on a distant planet called Salvation, a place built to hold metahumans deemed too dangerous for Earth, after Rick Flag Sr. exiled him there for killing his son.

As the one-year anniversary of that finale approaches this October, James Gunn has finally broken the long silence surrounding the show’s future. Asked on Threads whether there was “any chance for a Peacemaker Season 3,” Gunn responded with nothing more than a single confused-face emoji, leaving fans to parse every possible meaning behind the cryptic reply.

That kind of ambiguous response fits a pattern Gunn has followed for months when asked directly about renewal plans. He’s previously told outlets that a third season isn’t officially in development, while also stopping short of ruling it out entirely, repeatedly emphasizing that Peacemaker remains an important character within the wider DC Universe even if his next appearance doesn’t come in a traditional Season 3 format.

Beyond Chris’s own imprisonment, the finale left several other threads dangling that could easily fuel a continuation. Adrian, played by Freddie Stroma, used the show’s ill-gotten cash to launch Checkmate, a new counter-intelligence organization built around familiar 11th Street Kids like Harcourt, Economos, Adebayo, Fleury, Judomaster and Bordeaux, all seemingly positioned to mount a rescue mission for their imprisoned friend.

Meanwhile, Flag and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor appear to be developing Salvation into a full-scale prison operation for metahumans, a premise that closely echoes the 2007 DC Comics storyline “Salvation Run,” which saw villains like Luthor, the Joker and several Flash rogues exiled to a similar off-world prison. That comic book parallel suggests the concept has enough mythology behind it to sustain a larger DCU storyline, whether or not it takes the specific shape of another Peacemaker season.

Given how directly Season 2 tied into Gunn’s broader Superman-launched DCU plans, any follow-up to these dangling plot threads would likely need to fit into the larger release slate rather than standing entirely on its own. Whether that means an actual third season, a Checkmate-focused spinoff, or Chris Smith’s storyline simply continuing in other DCU projects remains entirely up in the air.

For now, Gunn’s single emoji is the closest thing fans have to an official update, and it’s done little to settle the debate over what’s actually being planned behind the scenes.
