‘Modern Family’s’ Ed O’Neill Makes a Rare Public Appearance for Sweet Cast Reunion

Few sitcoms managed to make an ensemble feel as genuinely like family as ‘Modern Family’ did during its eleven-season run on ABC. The Emmy-winning comedy turned its cast into a tight-knit unit both on screen and off, and fans have spent the years since its 2020 finale hungry for any sign that the Pritchett-Dunphy clan still keeps in touch.

That hunger was rewarded this week when several stars from the beloved series stepped out together for a rare group appearance that quickly lit up social media. Given how much the show leaned on its cast’s genuine chemistry, seeing them together again outside the confines of a script felt like more than just a casual hangout.

The gathering brought together Ed O’Neill, Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, along with ‘Modern Family’ co-creator Christopher Lloyd, for a mini-reunion that played out across a series of photos shared over the weekend. Vergara posted the images to Instagram on Monday, August 31, marking the get-together with a caption expressing how much she missed her former co-stars nearly six years removed from the show’s finale.

What made the moment especially notable was O’Neill’s presence. The 80-year-old actor, who played family patriarch Jay Pritchett for over a decade, has largely stayed out of the public eye since the show wrapped, making appearances like this increasingly uncommon.

Fans reacted with visible excitement over seeing O’Neill again, with many commenting specifically on how youthful and healthy he appeared in the new photos. Since ‘Modern Family’ ended, O’Neill has kept a relatively low profile, though he did take on the role of disgraced Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in FX’s ‘Clipped’ in 2024 and appeared in a recurring capacity on 2025’s ‘All’s Fair.’

‘Modern Family’ originally aired from 2009 to 2020, running for eleven seasons and concluding with its 250th episode. During its run, the series earned a staggering 88 Emmy nominations and took home 22 wins, including five for outstanding comedy series along with acting honors for Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, and Ty Burrell.

On the show, O’Neill’s Jay was married to Vergara’s Gloria, while Ferguson and Bowen played his adult children from a previous marriage, Mitchell and Claire, respectively. The ensemble also included Burrell as Claire’s husband Phil, Stonestreet as Mitchell’s husband Cameron, and a younger generation of characters played by Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Sarah Hyland, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, and Jeremy Maguire.
