‘GTA 6′ Weapon System Leak Reveals a Major Shift Away From the Series’ Classic Arsenal
Grand Theft Auto has always let players carry an absurd amount of firepower at once, and for years that was part of the fun. Wheeling through a full weapon wheel mid-firefight became such a signature part of the franchise that most fans never questioned whether it made sense.
Rockstar Games appears ready to change that formula entirely as ‘GTA 6’ inches closer to its November 19 release. The upcoming open-world title has already promised a more grounded, reactive version of Vice City, and now new details suggest the combat systems built around it are getting an equally significant overhaul.
According to newly surfaced details on the game’s weapon system, players will only be able to carry four weapons in their active inventory at once, made up of two long-range weapons, one pistol, and one melee weapon. Any additional firepower will need to be stored in a car trunk or hideout instead of pulled instantly from thin air the way earlier entries in the series allowed.
This shift toward a limited carry system isn’t happening in isolation. Reports describe Rockstar drawing heavily from the inventory logic of ‘Red Dead Redemption 2,’ with players expected to think through their loadout before heading into a mission rather than swapping freely between an unlimited arsenal mid-fight.
That kind of restriction changes the rhythm of how missions and heists will likely play out. A player prepping for a loud, chaotic shootout might load up on a rifle and shotgun, while someone easing into a stealthier job could opt for a suppressed long-range weapon paired with a pistol instead.
In-depth weapon customization is also part of the new system, giving players more control over how their limited loadout performs once they’re out in Leonida. Combined with vehicle trunk and hideout storage for spare weapons, the changes suggest Rockstar wants preparation itself to become a meaningful part of the gameplay loop.
Beyond the carry limit, another detail points to a more reactive world overall: NPCs will reportedly notice immediately if a player has their weapon drawn in public. That’s a notable departure from the more forgiving crowd behavior of past ‘GTA’ entries, where wandering around with a gun out rarely triggered much reaction unless violence had already started.
Paired with the smaller inventory, this suggests Rockstar is leaning into a version of Vice City that responds to player behavior with far more nuance than before. Simply brandishing a weapon in a public space could now carry real consequences, pushing players toward more deliberate choices about when and where to engage.
Fans have spent years speculating about how ‘GTA 6’ would modernize combat, especially given how much open-world design has evolved since ‘GTA 5’ first introduced its now-classic weapon wheel over a decade ago. A restricted, customization-heavy system fits with the more grounded tone Rockstar has emphasized throughout the game’s marketing, including its focus on protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos navigating a version of Vice City that feels lived-in rather than cartoonish.
With ‘GTA 6′ now locked in for a November 19 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S following two previous delays, details like this weapon system overhaul are likely to keep fueling discussion in the lead-up to launch. Whether players embrace the added realism or miss the chaos of the old weapon wheel will probably become one of the more debated aspects of the game once it’s finally in players’ hands.
What do you think of GTA 6 limiting players to a four-weapon loadout?
