βGTA 6β Extended Look Just Broke Netflix, Beating Out Every Movie on the Platform
Netflix has spent years chasing ways to court the gaming world beyond its own mobile titles, but nothing the streamer has tried quite prepared audiences for what just happened with ‘Grand Theft Auto VI.’ Rockstar’s most anticipated release in over a decade found an unlikely new stage for its latest reveal, and the numbers that came out of it are turning heads across both the gaming and entertainment industries.
Netflix struck a deal with Rockstar Games to exclusively premiere an extended look at ‘GTA 6’ gameplay before it hit any other platform, giving subscribers a first crack at footage most fans expected to find on YouTube. The special ran just over 26 minutes, offering the deepest look yet at the game’s protagonists, Jason and Lucia, as they move through the fictional state of Leonida.
That gamble paid off in a massive way. The ‘GTA 6’ extended look reached 31.1 million views on Netflix, landing at number one in 87 of the 93 countries the platform tracks globally and becoming the single most-watched title on Netflix for the entire week.
What makes the number even more striking is how little time Netflix actually had exclusive access to the footage. The deal only gave the streamer a six-hour exclusivity window before Rockstar uploaded the same extended look to its own YouTube channel, yet Netflix still managed to pull in nearly double the audience that YouTube saw during the same reporting period.
Netflix measures its numbers differently than YouTube, using what the platform calls Completed Viewing Equivalents, meaning one household watching the special twice counts the same as watching it once. Even accounting for that stricter counting method, the special still beat out major new Netflix originals released that same week, including Robert De Niro’s thriller ‘The Whisper Man’ and the final season of ‘Outer Banks.’
Categorized on Netflix as an English-language film rather than a game or a trailer, the special’s performance places it firmly among the platform’s biggest wins of the year. It didn’t crack Netflix’s all-time top 10 list, but industry watchers have still called the result one of the clearest signals yet that Netflix can function as a legitimate launchpad for major gaming events, not just as a place to stream shows and movies.
The extended look was captured directly from the PlayStation 5 version of the game and gave fans their first true glimpse at how gameplay mechanics will function at launch. Footage showed off everything from drug deals and late-night drives to character switching between Jason and Lucia, along with a broader look at the systems players will eventually explore themselves once the game releases.
One particularly notable moment showed the game shifting control between the two lead characters on command, hinting at gameplay possibilities that go beyond how earlier entries in the franchise handled dual protagonists. With the full game still building anticipation ahead of its release, this kind of deep-dive footage appears to have satisfied a hunger fans have been building for years, translating directly into the record-setting viewership numbers now coming out of Netflix.
Between the massive Netflix debut and the millions more watching on YouTube, it’s clear anticipation for ‘GTA 6’ has reached a fever pitch few releases ever achieve.
