‘Until Dawn 2’ Gets a Chilling New Trailer: Here’s Release Date, Cast, Plot & Everything We Know

Choice-driven horror games have carved out a devoted following over the past decade, and few titles defined that genre quite like the original ‘Until Dawn.’ The 2015 survival horror hit built its reputation on branching narratives where every decision carried real weight, letting players determine which characters lived and which ones met a gruesome end on Blackwood Mountain.

That legacy has been building toward a full sequel ever since PlayStation first announced ‘Until Dawn 2’ during a State of Play showcase back in June, teasing a new tropical setting and an entirely fresh cast of characters. Fans have been eagerly awaiting more details in the months since that initial reveal.

Those details finally arrived during Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, which delivered a new trailer packed with gameplay footage alongside a confirmed release date. ‘Until Dawn 2’ is officially set to launch on PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027, giving fans a concrete date to look forward to as the countdown officially begins.

Unlike its predecessor’s snow-covered mountain backdrop, ‘Until Dawn 2’ relocates the terror to Akishima Island, a remote tropical paradise abandoned for decades and hiding dark secrets of its own. According to the official synopsis, the story follows the Dead True ghost-hunting crew as they chase their biggest story yet, with an investigation at Blackwood Sanitorium taking a chilling turn that eventually leads them to the island after an encounter with a supernatural survivor named Yoona.

The sequel is being developed by Firesprite rather than Supermassive Games, the studio behind the original title, though the franchise’s signature Butterfly Effect gameplay mechanic remains firmly intact. Players will once again shape the story’s outcome through their choices, determining who survives and who falls victim throughout the group’s ordeal.

‘Until Dawn 2’ Cast Revealed: Dacre Montgomery, Neil Newbon, and Peter Stormare Lead the Charge to Akishima Island

The new cast features Neil Newbon of ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ fame and Dacre Montgomery from ‘Stranger Things,’ among other performers lending their likenesses and voices to the game’s ensemble of characters. Notably, Peter Stormare is confirmed to reprise his role as Dr. Hill from the original game, suggesting a thread of continuity linking the sequel back to Blackwood Mountain’s Wendigo-infested universe.

Alongside the release date reveal, PlayStation confirmed that pre-orders for ‘Until Dawn 2’ will open on September 10. Fans who pre-order either the Standard or Digital Deluxe Edition starting that date will unlock Dr. Hill-themed bonus content, while the Digital Deluxe Edition specifically includes an additional Y2K Neon Vibes Pack along with a Dioramas of Death extra feature.

The game is being positioned as a standalone experience, meaning newcomers won’t need familiarity with the original title to jump into this fresh island-set nightmare. That approach mirrors a broader trend in narrative horror sequels aiming to attract both longtime series fans and players discovering the choice-driven format for the first time.

The January 28, 2027 release date positions ‘Until Dawn 2’ as one of the first major titles on PlayStation’s calendar heading into the new year, arriving just weeks before another anticipated release, ‘God of War: Laufey,’ which is currently slated for February. That lineup suggests Sony is gearing up for a particularly strong start to 2027 across its first-party and exclusive offerings.

With a new trailer now confirming both the setting and stakes of this island-bound nightmare, anticipation for ‘Until Dawn 2’ shows no signs of slowing down ahead of its early 2027 launch.
