‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Set to Become Only the Second Film Ever to Cross $900 Million Domestically

Box office records have a habit of standing for years, sometimes decades, before a new contender comes along capable of genuinely threatening them. That’s especially true at the domestic level, where only a small handful of films have ever cracked the $900 million threshold in North America alone.

Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Spider-Man has spent its entire theatrical run rewriting those kinds of benchmarks, shattering the previous domestic opening record and racing past milestone after milestone at a pace that’s left industry trackers scrambling to keep up. That momentum has only intensified as the film heads deeper into its run.

Now, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to become just the second film in movie history to cross $900 million at the domestic box office, following a strong $1.7 million fifth Wednesday performance that pushed its running cume to $898.1 million, according to box office tracking shared on social media. The film is projected to officially cross that threshold on Friday.

What makes this milestone particularly striking is the speed at which it’s being achieved. According to Forbes, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ remains the only other film to ever cross $900 million domestically, and it took 50 days to get there back in 2016. ‘Brand New Day’ is on pace to reach that same mark in under 35 days, representing a margin of more than two weeks faster than the previous record holder.

That comparison extends beyond just speed. According to ComicBasics, the film’s domestic total now sits more than $88 million ahead of where ‘Avengers: Endgame’ stood at the same point in its own historic 2019 run, despite ‘Brand New Day’ having only opened roughly $3 million ahead of Endgame’s pace at the start.

The film’s climb up the all-time domestic chart has been equally dramatic. ‘Brand New Day’ has already surpassed ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ $858.3 million lifetime domestic total to claim the No. 2 spot on the all-time North American chart, with only ‘The Force Awakens’ and its $936.6 million total standing between Holland’s film and the outright record.

Industry estimates now project ‘Brand New Day’ could ultimately land somewhere between $950 million and $960 million domestically, a range that would officially dethrone ‘The Force Awakens’ as the highest-grossing film of all time in the United States, a record that has stood for more than a decade. That kind of projection would have seemed almost unthinkable for a fourth installment in an ongoing franchise just a few months ago.

The film’s international performance has kept pace with its domestic dominance as well, having already crossed $2 billion worldwide to become just the eighth film in cinema history to reach that mark. Its opening weekend alone delivered the biggest domestic debut ever recorded, and it went on to post the highest-grossing first week in North American box office history.

Beyond the pure numbers, ‘Brand New Day’ has continued earning strong marks from audiences throughout its run, carrying an “A” CinemaScore rating that reflects the overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth that’s helped sustain its momentum well past opening weekend. That combination of critical goodwill and record-shattering box office performance has made the film one of the defining theatrical events of the year.

With Labor Day weekend traffic having already given the film an extra push toward this milestone, all eyes now turn to whether ‘Brand New Day’ can close the remaining gap and officially claim the all-time domestic crown before its theatrical run winds down.
