‘The Odyssey‘ opened back in mid-July as a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem, a genre gamble that quickly proved to be anything but risky. Even as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ shattered records with the biggest domestic opening weekend in history the following month, Nolan’s film kept pulling audiences back into theaters at a pace that continued surprising industry analysts.

That resilience paid off again this week. ‘The Odyssey’ has surpassed ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to reclaim the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office on Wednesday, according to ComicBasics, marking a genuine milestone considering the film is now 48 days into its theatrical run.

The film’s latest Wednesday performance carried real historical weight. According to industry tracking shared on social media, ‘The Odyssey’ pulled in a strong $1.8 million on its seventh Wednesday in release, only a 21.7% drop from the previous week despite losing 474 theaters the previous Friday. That figure marked the biggest seventh-Wednesday performance ever for an R-rated film, surpassing ‘Obsession’s’ $1.4 million mark, and also stands as the biggest seventh Wednesday of Nolan’s entire directing career, beating ‘The Dark Knight’s’ $536,000 by a wide margin.

That kind of staying power at 48 days above $1 million matches the 48-day streak previously set by ‘Michael’ and ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ tying for the second-longest such run ever recorded for an R-rated release. Given how quickly typical blockbusters fall off after their opening weeks, a hold this steady nearly seven weeks into release is a genuinely rare achievement.

The film’s sustained momentum has pushed its domestic cume to roughly $569.8 million, positioning it to soon overtake ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s’ $574.9 million run and become Universal’s second-highest-grossing release ever in North America, trailing only the studio’s own ‘Jurassic World,’ according to ComicBasics.

That domestic total sits alongside a global haul that has already made ‘The Odyssey’ Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film of all time, worldwide, surpassing both ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ in the process. The film also holds the distinction of being the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie ever released, trailing only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

What makes this week’s box office flip particularly notable is just how far removed it is from either film’s opening weekend. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set the all-time domestic opening record with $360 million and has continued posting historic numbers of its own throughout its run, making ‘The Odyssey’s’ ability to briefly reclaim the top spot nearly two months later an unusual feat.

Just two weeks ago, the $600 million domestic mark looked like a realistic ceiling for ‘The Odyssey.’ Now, that same number has effectively become a new baseline given how resilient the film’s holds have remained heading into the fall, with some industry trackers projecting a final domestic run somewhere between $610 million and $630 million.

With both films continuing to post historic numbers well into their theatrical windows, 2026 is shaping up as one of the strongest years for original, big-swing filmmaking in recent memory.
