Netflix Reveals First Look at Fire Lord Ozai for ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 3

Netflix’s live-action take on ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ has spent two seasons steadily building toward the franchise’s most consequential showdown, adapting Aang’s journey from a reluctant hero learning to bend water into a fully realized war against the Fire Nation. That slow-burn approach has paid off with each new season, culminating in a Season 2 finale that left fans reeling.

That finale ended on a particularly devastating note, with Aang struck down by Azula’s lightning during a critical confrontation, his survival left uncertain as Katara scrambled to revive him using the sacred Spirit Oasis water. Making matters worse, the Earth Kingdom’s capital of Ba Sing Se fell under Fire Nation control by the episode’s end, handing Fire Lord Ozai a strategic advantage he’d spent years chasing.

With the wait for the show’s next chapter already feeling long to fans, Netflix has now offered a small but meaningful update. A new preview image for ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 3 has been released, spotlighting a distinctly unhappy Fire Lord Ozai ahead of the series’ final season, which is set for 2027.

Season 3 is expected to adapt Book Three: Fire, the concluding chapter of the original animated series, which follows Aang as he learns firebending in order to face Ozai before Sozin’s Comet arrives and renders the Fire Lord unstoppable. According to GamesRadar, that storyline will also dig into Zuko’s conflicted feelings about returning to the Fire Nation after siding with Azula against Aang, Katara, and Iroh at the climax of Season 2.

Netflix confirmed that Season 3 will officially serve as the live-action series’ final chapter, aiming, in the streamer’s own words, “to conclude the epic story as the four nations unite – Water, Earth, Fire, Air – to bring The Legend of Aang to its proper conclusion,” according to TVInsider. That framing suggests the season will lean heavily into the franchise’s central themes of unity and balance as it wraps up Aang’s arc.

Beyond Ozai, earlier previews have teased other major story beats heading into the final season, including Team Avatar’s push toward winning the Earth King’s support and Aang’s continued training with Toph, the earthbending master who plays a key role in preparing him for his final confrontation with the Fire Nation.

Netflix has not announced an official premiere date for Season 3, though production details offer some helpful context. Because Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back and wrapped filming in late 2025, the final season is expected to debut sometime in early to mid-2027, according to TVInsider.

The returning cast includes Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Season 2 previously earned a 67% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, marking a five-point improvement over the show’s Season 1 reception, according to CBR.

With critical reception trending upward across the show’s run and a clear narrative endpoint already mapped out, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ appears positioned to close out its live-action story on solid footing. The new Ozai image, while brief, gives fans their first real glimpse of the villain heading into what promises to be the franchise’s biggest confrontation yet.

As 2027 approaches and more details inevitably surface, anticipation for the live-action adaptation’s final season shows no signs of slowing down.
