Vin Diesel Just Teased Who Might Direct the Final ‘Fast & Furious’ Movie

The ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise has always thrived on spectacle, but its offscreen drama lately has been just as dramatic as anything happening on a runway full of exploding cars. Between shifting release dates, budget concerns, and a script that reportedly moved its own star to tears, ‘Fast Forever‘ has become one of the more chaotic productions in recent memory before a single frame has even been shot.

Vin Diesel has positioned himself as the unofficial hype man for this final chapter, regularly using his social media to drip-feed updates, teases, and emotional reactions long before Universal makes anything official. His latest post continued that pattern, though this time it wasn’t about the script or the cast.

On Instagram, Diesel shared a black-and-white photo of his classic 1970 Dodge Charger R/T alongside a caption that read simply, “Director… Hmmm…” The post immediately set off speculation that Diesel might be angling to direct ‘Fast Forever’ himself, stepping into a role that has, for years, been expected to belong to someone else entirely.

That someone else is Louis Leterrier, who took over directing duties on ‘Fast X’ after Justin Lin’s abrupt exit and has been attached to close out the saga with ‘Fast Forever.’ No official announcement has confirmed that Leterrier is stepping away, and Diesel’s post never explicitly says he’s taking the reins, leaving fans to parse a caption that offers exactly two words of actual information.

Diesel’s directing history isn’t entirely hypothetical. He’s helmed a handful of projects over the years, including the short film ‘Los Bandoleros,’ which built out backstory for Dominic Toretto ahead of 2009’s ‘Fast & Furious,’ along with an episode of ‘The Ropes’ and other early directing credits. If he does end up in the chair for ‘Fast Forever,’ he’d become the eighth different director across the franchise’s history, following names like Justin Lin, James Wan, F. Gary Gray, David Leitch, and Leterrier himself.

Given how central Diesel already is to the franchise, not just as its lead but as a longtime producer, taking over as director for the send-off would be a genuinely full-circle moment. It also wouldn’t be entirely out of nowhere, since Diesel has increasingly framed himself as the project’s creative steward through his social posts, even as official details about the film remain scarce.

Part of what’s fueling the confusion is Leterrier’s own recent comments about where things stand. He’s acknowledged that he hasn’t yet read the ‘Fast Forever’ script that reportedly brought Diesel to tears, and while he’s confirmed he still intends to direct the film, his answers have sounded notably less certain than Diesel’s enthusiastic Instagram posts about the project’s momentum.

It’s also entirely possible Diesel’s tease refers to something smaller than the feature itself, like a short film or promotional piece rather than ‘Fast Forever’ proper, especially given his history of directing bonus content tied to the franchise. Until Universal weighs in, the post remains open to interpretation, which hasn’t stopped fans from flooding the comments with theories and reactions anyway.

Production on ‘Fast Forever’ is still expected to begin in December 2026, keeping the film on track for its March 17, 2028 release date. Whether Diesel ends up calling the shots behind the camera or this turns out to be another one of his cryptic red herrings, the tease has succeeded in doing exactly what it was probably designed to do: keep everyone talking.
