Michael Waldron Confirms He’s Developing Marvel’s Nova Movie, Teases Rich Rider’s MCU Debut

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has spent years building out its cosmic corner without ever fully cashing in on one of its most requested characters. Ever since the Nova Corps first appeared as background players in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ fans have wondered when Marvel would finally give Richard Rider his own spotlight.

That wait has stretched on for the better part of a decade, with development on a Nova project quietly moving through different writers and studio priorities behind the scenes. Given how much cosmic mythology Marvel has since built through Thor, Captain Marvel and the Guardians trilogy, the timing has only made fans more eager for confirmation that Nova’s moment was finally arriving.

That confirmation has now come directly from the writer attached to the project. Michael Waldron, the writer behind ‘Loki’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ discussed his work on Nova in a new interview, expressing genuine excitement for the character while staying tight-lipped on specific plot details.

Speaking with TheWrap, Waldron addressed his connection to the project directly, saying, “I love Nova. I love Rich Rider.” He added that however Marvel chooses to expand the cosmic side of its universe going forward “will be really cool,” while stopping short of confirming exact creative details tied to his involvement.

Part of what makes Nova such a tricky character to adapt is just how much history he carries in the comics. Waldron pointed to that complexity himself, noting that Richard Rider spans multiple eras and storylines, which has made pinpointing exactly where to begin his screen story a genuine creative challenge.

When asked about his favorite Richard Rider storyline, Waldron pointed to “Annihilation,” a fan-favorite comic arc where Rider becomes the sole survivor of an Annihilus attack that wipes out the Nova Corps, absorbing the full Nova Force into himself in the process. That storyline has long been considered a natural blueprint for how a live-action adaptation could approach the character’s origin.

The conversation also touched on a lingering continuity question fans have wondered about for years: how a Nova project would address the destruction of the Nova Corps during ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ Waldron acknowledged that any story moving forward would need to reckon with that fallout, though he declined to elaborate on how the film plans to handle it.

Waldron’s enthusiasm for the project has also fueled fresh speculation about who could eventually play Richard Rider on screen. During a separate conversation, Waldron floated Glen Powell, his ‘Chad Powers’ star and collaborator, as a strong fit for the role, praising his potential take on the character without confirming any official casting decision.

Reports from earlier this year indicated Marvel had briefly paused development on Nova alongside a handful of other projects during a broader studio reevaluation. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has since confirmed the project remains roughly three to four years out, suggesting development is continuing steadily even if a release date remains far off.

Waldron’s growing footprint at Marvel extends well beyond Nova as well, with the writer also credited on the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and reportedly working on ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ alongside Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. That expanding portfolio suggests Marvel continues to trust Waldron with some of its biggest cosmic and ensemble storytelling going forward.

For now, fans will have to keep speculating about casting, tone and how deeply the film plans to dig into the character’s complicated comic book history. Given how long Nova has waited for his live-action debut, expectations are understandably high for whatever Waldron and Marvel ultimately deliver.
