MCU’s ‘Nova’ Series Finally Gets a Major Update After Years of Waiting
Marvel Studios has spent years teasing the arrival of one of its most requested cosmic heroes, and the wait has been long enough that many fans have quietly written the project off. That long-dormant series is finally showing signs of life again, and the update comes with a familiar name attached.
Kevin Feige first mentioned the character’s potential all the way back in 2018, and the road to actually getting Nova onto screens has been anything but smooth since then. The project has bounced between formats and writers for years, hitting a major setback in February 2025 when Marvel Studios paused development on the series entirely alongside a handful of other Disney+ projects.
Now, according to the Writers Guild of America West directory, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Loki’ writer Michael Waldron has been added to the Nova series as a writer for the 2026 to 2027 season, suggesting the long-delayed project has quietly resumed development. The listing places Nova at the top of Waldron’s television employment history, ahead of credits like ‘Chad Powers’, ‘Loki’, ‘Heels’, and ‘Rick and Morty’.
Waldron’s involvement is notable given his growing footprint across the MCU in recent years. He served as head writer on the first season of ‘Loki’, wrote ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, and has since become one of Marvel’s most relied upon scribes, co writing both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and the upcoming ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ alongside Stephen McFeely.
Interestingly, Waldron previously expressed public interest in tackling Nova specifically, telling the Bingeworthy podcast that he had his own vision for who should play the character, floating Glen Powell as his pick for Richard Rider. Waldron and Powell already have a working relationship, having co created the Hulu comedy series ‘Chad Powers’ together, so the pairing would hardly be unprecedented if it ever came to pass.
It remains unclear exactly what role Waldron will play on the project, since the WGA directory does not list a specific title and he has previously worked as a writer, producer, showrunner, and executive producer across different assignments. Ed Bernero, the ‘Criminal Minds’ veteran who was brought on as showrunner in late 2024, appears to remain attached based on the most recent available information, though how the two will divide creative duties is not yet clear.
Nova has had a particularly rocky development history even by Marvel Television standards. The project was originally conceived as a feature film back in 2022 with ‘Moon Knight’ writer Sabir Pirzada attached to the script, before transitioning into a television series the following year. It then went through additional stops and starts as Marvel restructured its streaming plans, eventually landing back in active development in late 2024 before getting paused again just months later.
Reports have previously indicated that Bernero’s version of the story would introduce the classic Marvel villain Annihilus, pitting the character against Richard Rider and a young team of Nova Corps members as they work to rebuild after Thanos’s attack on Xandar. Whether Waldron’s involvement signals a shift away from that direction or simply a polish on the existing scripts remains to be seen.
Waldron’s attachment to yet another major Marvel project comes as no surprise to those who have followed his rapid rise within the studio, even if his association with the so called Rick and Morty writers room era of Marvel Television has occasionally drawn criticism from fans skeptical of that creative pipeline. Feige has clearly continued to place significant trust in him regardless, having also brought him on for an unmade Star Wars film in the past.
Are you excited that Marvel's Nova series is finally moving forward?
Given the timing of this update, there is a real possibility Marvel could use next week’s San Diego Comic Con panel to officially confirm where things stand with Nova, especially with the studio already gearing up to make a splash around ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. For now, fans finally have a genuine reason to believe the Human Rocket might actually make it to screens after all these years.
