Who Is Gerry and What Happens to Him in the ‘Chad Powers’ Season 2 Finale?

Chad Powers‘ fans went into the Season 2 finale expecting the truth about Russ Holliday to finally come out, and Gerry made sure the tension never let up. Throughout the season, Gerry, played by Colton Ryan, grows increasingly suspicious of Chad and even stalks the starting quarterback and the people closest to him. By the time the last episode rolls around, he is no longer guessing. He knows exactly who is hiding underneath the prosthetics.

The Hulu sports comedy has built its entire second season around that slow unraveling, and Gerry’s arc becomes the engine driving nearly every major decision Chad, real name Russ, makes. In the finale, Gerry knows that Chad is really Russ and uses the secret to blackmail him. That single twist sets up one of the most chaotic endings the show has delivered yet.

Gerry’s Blackmail Scheme Against Chad Powers

Once Gerry has the proof he needs, he does not go public right away. Instead, he uses it as leverage. At the end of episode 5, Gerry attacks Danny at his and Chad’s house and breaks into the basement, where all of Chad’s prosthetics are on display, giving him hard evidence of the fraud. Afterward, Gerry and Chad meet up at a local movie theater, where Gerry gives Chad an ultimatum, which Chad decides to keep secret from both Ricky and Danny in order to protect them.

That ultimatum turns out to be far more calculated than a simple threat. Gerry demands that Chad play a historically bad game so that Gerry can win the bets he has placed against him and collect two hundred thousand dollars. Gerry does not just want the money though, he wants everyone to hate Chad as much as they already hate him.

The scheme gets even messier from there. Once Chad loses the game, Gerry also insists that Chad take responsibility for framing him by placing a 3D printed gun in his locker during a previous episode, and if Chad complies, Gerry agrees not to come forward with the truth about Chad Powers. Gerry’s plan even includes a six leg betting parlay tied to Chad having an exceptionally poor game, complete with restrictions on his passing yardage, touchdowns and interceptions.

Ricky Finds a Loophole to Beat Gerry’s Rules

Rather than let Russ carry the burden alone, Ricky steps in with a plan of her own. Ricky finds a loophole in Gerry’s demands, using her knowledge of Russ’ old Oregon game tape to draw up trick plays that let the Catfish score without technically breaking Gerry’s rules. Ricky realizes the Catfish do not need Chad to produce the numbers himself to win, so South Georgia attacks Texas through unconventional play calling, misdirection and contributions from other players while keeping Chad’s personal statistics within Gerry’s restrictions.

The result is a wild swing in momentum. What looks like a deliberate collapse in the first half becomes a team driven comeback, and South Georgia ultimately defeats Texas. Gerry’s carefully built trap starts falling apart in real time, and it becomes clear his revenge plan was never as airtight as he thought.

What Happens to Gerry in the Final Moments?

The game itself comes down to the wire, and Chad has a choice to make. In the final moments, Chad scores the game winning touchdown, but a penalty sets the team back with only two seconds left on the clock, and the only way to score again is by breaking Gerry’s strict rules. As Chad weighs his options, he shares a heartfelt moment with Coach Hudson, who tells him that no matter what happens, he is grateful for the season they shared and proud of him, and that Chad’s late mother would have been too.

Chad makes his decision anyway. He decides to run for it and scores the game winning touchdown for real, and while everyone celebrates, he and Ricky search for each other in the crowd and hug, thankful he went for the win despite Gerry’s threats. Gerry, furious that Chad broke his terms and cost him two hundred thousand dollars, storms onto the field, and as he charges toward Russ and Ricky, he gets punched by Tricia Yeager’s security guard.

That is not quite the end of Gerry’s story either. Tricia’s security guard tackles and catches Gerry, and Tricia tells Danny her employer now owns Chad Powers, revealing that Chad and the people around him will live on her ranch and that Chad will play for a long time to come. Tricia having her security team step in is enough to put a swift end to Gerry’s scheming, at least for now.

The Aftermath For Chad, Ricky and Coach Hudson

With Gerry finally out of the way, the finale shifts into a much lighter register. Chad and Ricky decide they will figure out their new situation later, and while Ricky tries to fix his makeup, Chad tells her he loves her, and the two finally kiss and start hooking up in the changing room. It is a payoff fans of the will they won’t they dynamic between Chad and Ricky had been waiting on since the season began.

Of course, the timing could not be worse for secrecy. Coach Hudson opens the door and sees them together, and the cat is officially out of the bag as the season ends. Steve Zahn, who plays Coach Hudson, confirmed his character still remains completely in the dark about Chad’s real identity as of that final beat, joking that the writers had written themselves into a corner since he is only shown as a blur in the background of that shot.

Ricky’s own future adds another layer to the finale’s emotional weight. Her decision to take a new coaching job means her days working alongside Russ are numbered, even as their romance finally becomes real. Between Gerry’s unresolved fate, Tricia’s new ownership stake in Chad’s future and Coach Hudson’s coming reckoning, ‘Chad Powers’ has left itself plenty of room to keep the ruse going.

Between Gerry’s blackmail unraveling, Tricia’s security guard stepping in and Coach Hudson walking in on that kiss, what do you think should happen to Gerry if ‘Chad Powers’ comes back for a third season?
