Creator Dallas Jenkins has spoken about why this particular stretch of the story demanded its own season and its own film. Everyone knows the basics of this part of the story, but not everyone knows the why of the crucifixion and the extraordinary events of these 24 hours, he explained, adding that the production wrote and filmed everything with both the television season and the standalone theatrical event in mind.

Star Jonathan Roumie, who has played Jesus across all six seasons, has also opened up about how heavy the shoot became. In comments, Roumie said that for the first few months afterward he would get weepy going to Mass, calling the experience of playing and reenacting the passion humbling and something that has left an indelible impression on him mentally and emotionally.

‘The Chosen’ Season 7 and the Road Ahead

Season 6 is not the finish line for ‘The Chosen,’ but it does set up the beginning of the end. Season 7 will kick off with a feature film depicting the resurrection of Jesus, exclusively in theaters on March 31, 2028, closing out the story roughly a year after the Season 6 finale hits screens.

Jenkins has also drawn a clear line between his vision for the crucifixion and other well known depictions of the same event. Speaking with People, Jenkins said he does not think the crucifixion was family friendly and that the show will still depict some of that reality, though it will not be quite as explicit as Mel Gibson’s approach.
