‘South Park’ Just Gave Trump the Emmy He’s Always Wanted, With a Brutal Twist

‘South Park’ has spent nearly three decades building a reputation as one of television’s most fearless satirical voices, willing to take aim at whoever happens to be dominating the cultural conversation at any given moment. That willingness to poke fun across the political spectrum has earned the animated comedy a long history with the Television Academy, and this year’s ceremony added another chapter to that legacy.

The show, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program on September 6 at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony in Los Angeles. The win recognized the show’s most recent eligible episodes, split across seasons 27 and 28, which leaned heavily into political satire throughout their runs.

Rather than simply celebrating the honor, the official ‘South Park’ account used the win to deliver a pointed jab at one of the season’s most frequent targets. The show posted an image on social media showing its animated characters, including Satan, surrounding a cartoon version of President Donald Trump clutching the Emmy trophy with his pants and underwear around his ankles, captioned “You finally got your Emmy.”

The joke lands squarely on one of Trump’s long-running showbusiness grievances. As an executive producer of NBC’s ‘The Apprentice,’ Trump shared in two Outstanding Reality-Competition Program nominations back in 2004 and 2005, with the series losing both times to CBS’s ‘The Amazing Race.’ He’s since spent years publicly complaining about the snub, insisting the show should have won multiple times over and that the ceremony itself has no credibility.

That history of griping made the timing of ‘South Park’s’ post especially cutting. Trump has previously called the Emmys horrendous, at one point writing on social media that the ceremony represents nothing but politics, a claim he’s tied directly to his own lack of wins over the years despite eight total nominations across ‘The Apprentice’s’ fifteen-season run.

This year’s win adds to an already substantial trophy case for the show. ‘South Park’ has picked up Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program across multiple eras of its run, including wins for episodes like “Best Friends Forever” in 2005, “Make Love, Not Warcraft” in 2006, “Imaginationland: The Movie” in 2008, “Margaritaville” in 2009, and “Raising the Bar” in 2012, before this year’s victory for season 27’s “Sermon on the ‘Mount.”

Parker and Stone have been candid in past interviews about why they leaned so heavily into political material this particular season. Parker explained the choice by noting that politics itself had effectively become pop culture, according to comments made to The New York Times, rather than the show deliberately chasing political controversy for its own sake.

Stone echoed that sentiment, describing how speaking out against the current political climate had increasingly felt taboo across the entertainment industry, adding that he and Parker have always been drawn toward that kind of resistance the way flies are drawn to honey.

Trump himself received an unusual visual treatment throughout the eligible season, appearing in episodes with real photographs pasted onto his animated body rather than a fully illustrated caricature, a stylistic choice that made the satire feel even more pointed. The approach became a recurring visual gag throughout the show’s most recent political episodes.

With new episodes set to premiere September 16, ‘South Park’ shows no sign of easing up on its favorite target anytime soon. The show’s willingness to combine awards-season celebration with pointed political commentary has once again proven exactly why it remains one of television’s most consistently talked-about series nearly thirty years into its run.
