M. Night Shyamalan Just Teamed Up With Nicholas Sparks, and the First Trailer for ‘Remain’ Is Wonderfully Strange

M. Night Shyamalan has built an entire career on genre-bending twists, but even by his standards, this next project sounds like an unlikely pairing on paper. The horror auteur behind ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘Signs’ has never exactly been associated with the kind of swoony, tear-jerking romance that made Nicholas Sparks a household name.

That’s precisely what makes ‘Remain‘ such a curious experiment. Rather than a straightforward adaptation, the project began as a shared story concept between Shyamalan and Sparks, with each creator independently developing their own version, Shyamalan writing and directing the film while Sparks penned a companion novel published last year using the same core characters and premise.

Now, the first teaser trailer for that unusual collaboration has finally arrived, confirming a theatrical release date of February 5, 2027, positioning the film as a Valentine’s Day counterprogramming play from Warner Bros. Jake Gyllenhaal leads the cast as Tate, a grieving architect who relocates to a small coastal town to complete a project after leaving a psychiatric facility, where he crosses paths with an alluring young woman who pulls him into the center of a deadly mystery hanging over the community.

That woman is Wren, played by “Bridgerton” breakout Phoebe Dynevor, whose character disrupts Tate’s carefully guarded, grief-stricken world. Warner Bros. has billed the project as “an unprecedented collaboration between two of the world’s most creative minds,” a description that leans into just how unusual it is to see Shyamalan’s supernatural sensibilities filtered through Sparks-style romantic melodrama.

The supporting cast rounds out with Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, and Maria Dizzia, giving the film a solid ensemble to build its mystery around. Shyamalan produces through his Blinding Edge Pictures banner alongside Ashwin Rajan, with Sparks’ longtime producing partner Theresa Park and Marc Bienstock also attached, while Sparks himself serves as an executive producer on the film.

Warner Bros. reportedly chose the February release date after seeing strong pre-sales momentum for another romance, ‘Wuthering Heights’, which is arriving in theaters this year around Valentine’s Day. The studio has increasingly viewed the traditionally slow February corridor as an underused opportunity for counterprogramming, and ‘Remain’ appears designed to capitalize on that same seasonal appetite for romantic storytelling.

Notably, industry sources have indicated that ‘Remain’ has earned the highest test scores of Shyamalan’s career, a striking claim given his decades-long track record of polarizing critical and audience reactions. That reception suggests the unlikely genre mashup may be resonating with test audiences in ways few expected going in.

Behind the camera, the film features cinematography from Adolpho Veloso and a score from longtime Shyamalan collaborator James Newton Howard, whose work has helped define the tone of the director’s films for years. With its supernatural undertones layered over a central romance, ‘Remain’ looks poised to occupy a genuinely unique space in both filmmakers’ respective bodies of work.

Given the significant age gap visible between Gyllenhaal’s and Dynevor’s characters in the footage, some early reactions to the trailer have already begun questioning that dynamic, though it remains to be seen how the film addresses it narratively. Whether ‘Remain’ ultimately leans harder into Shyamalan’s twisty instincts or Sparks’ emotional sincerity may end up being the defining question critics and audiences debate once it finally arrives.
