‘South Park’ Just “Renamed” Itself, and It’s Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Sharpest Political Jab Yet

Few shows have built their entire identity around skewering whatever’s dominating the news cycle quite like ‘South Park’. Nearly three decades in, Trey Parker and Matt Stone have shown zero signs of softening their approach, repeatedly using the show’s return each season as an opportunity to take direct aim at whatever political absurdity happens to be unfolding in real time.

That tradition continued in dramatic fashion this week, arriving just as the show notched a major industry honor. Fresh off winning the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, an award tied specifically to the Trump-skewering Season 27 premiere “Sermon on the Mount,” Parker and Stone wasted no time using their newfound momentum for another pointed statement.

That statement came in the form of an announcement that ‘South Park’ itself is officially being renamed. “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA,” Parker and Stone wrote, adding a pointed jab at their own corporate parent: “We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”

The joke directly satirizes a real pattern of behavior from the current administration, which has repeatedly pushed to rename major geographic locations to include “America” in the title. That trend has included renaming efforts targeting places like the Gulf of Mexico and New Mexico, along with a push to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America amid an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. Apple and Google drew criticism after both companies updated their map applications to reflect some of those renamed locations, a decision Parker and Stone are clearly mocking with their reference to the tech giants’ supposed “bravery and patriotism.”

The dig at Paramount carries its own layer of pointed commentary, referencing the company’s recent merger with Skydance and implying a broader pattern of corporate deference to political pressure. It’s a continuation of the show’s long-running willingness to bite the hand that feeds it, something Parker and Stone have leaned into repeatedly even as their series remains one of Paramount’s most valuable properties.

This isn’t the first time the show has directly targeted Trump and his administration in recent seasons either. Previous episodes have depicted the president in increasingly outlandish satirical scenarios, including a storyline portraying him in a romantic relationship with Satan, echoing the show’s earlier depiction of Saddam Hussein, along with a bit casting Vice President JD Vance as the character Tattoo from “Fantasy Island.”

Despite the attention-grabbing name change announcement, the show’s actual title and branding remain intact for all practical purposes, with the joke functioning as pure marketing theater ahead of Season 29’s premiere. That new season debuts Wednesday, September 16, at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central, with episodes streaming the following day on Paramount+.

Only six episodes have been confirmed for Season 29 so far, though Parker and Stone’s current deal with Paramount reportedly requires at least ten new episodes annually going forward, as part of a five-year, $1.5 billion agreement. That deal suggests additional episode announcements are likely once the season’s initial run gets underway.

With an Emmy win freshly in hand and yet another headline-grabbing stunt already generating buzz, ‘South Park’ shows no signs of dialing back its political commentary as it heads into its 29th season. If anything, Parker and Stone appear more emboldened than ever to keep using the show as a platform for skewering the exact kind of institutional absurdity they’ve built a career mocking.
