‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 Is Officially Back on Netflix, but the Numbers Tell a Very Different Story

Guy Ritchie built a reputation on stylish crime capers long before he ever set foot on a streaming platform, and ‘The Gentlemen‘ was supposed to be his crowning proof that the formula translates seamlessly to television. When the series first landed on Netflix back in March 2024, it delivered exactly that kind of splash, dominating the platform’s global charts almost instantly.

After a wait of roughly 2 and a half years, fans finally got their follow-up season on September 3, with Theo James and Kaya Scodelario returning to navigate Eddie and Susie’s increasingly precarious position inside Bobby’s criminal empire. The premise picks up 1 year after the pair joined forces, with Bobby’s unsound decisions now threatening to unravel everything they’ve built.

But the excitement surrounding the return has collided with a rougher reality once the viewership numbers came in. ‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 opened to 6.7 million views in its first few days on Netflix, a steep 45% drop compared to the 12.2 million views Season 1 pulled in during the same window back in 2024.

The drop-off isn’t limited to a single data point. Season 2 also debuted at number 3 on Netflix’s global chart, a noticeable step down from Season 1’s commanding number 1 debut, and total hours viewed fell nearly 39% even though the new season runs slightly longer overall.

That decline arrived despite Netflix appearing to invest more heavily in promoting the new season, including a fairly significant press push from star Theo James in the lead-up to release. The show had also already secured a third-season renewal before Season 2 even premiered, a vote of confidence that now looks slightly at odds with the opening numbers.

What makes the drop especially puzzling is that critical reception moved in the opposite direction. Season 2 landed an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, an improvement over Season 1’s 75%, suggesting the show’s quality isn’t the issue driving viewers away.

Some of that disconnect may simply come down to timing. The long gap between seasons appears to have pulled a chunk of the audience back to rewatch Season 1 first, which reentered Netflix’s global top 10 the same week Season 2 launched, pulling in 3.2 million views of its own as longtime fans caught themselves up on the story.

‘The Gentlemen’ is far from alone in facing this kind of sophomore slump. ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 saw a 31% drop compared to its own first season, while ‘Beef’ Season 2 fell by a much steeper 62%, and ‘That ’90s Show’ suffered an especially brutal 79% decline between its two seasons.

That pattern points to a platform-wide challenge for Netflix, where long waits between seasons and an oversaturated release calendar seem to be chipping away at the built-in audience shows can count on returning. Even a strong critical reception and a returning cast aren’t guaranteed to bring back everyone who showed up the first time around.

Whether ‘The Gentlemen’ can recover in its second week, the way some analysts have speculated it might once the Labor Day holiday distractions fade, remains to be seen. For now, the show sits in an unusual position: a genuinely well-reviewed sophomore season that still has to prove it can hold onto the audience Season 1 built.

What do you think is behind The Gentlemen Season 2’s lower viewership?
