‘Dune: Part Three’ Just Broke the Internet Before a Single Frame Has Screened
Denis Villeneuve has spent years turning Frank Herbert’s dense science fiction saga into one of modern cinema’s most reliably spectacular franchises, and anticipation for the trilogy’s final chapter has been building for months. With Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides story finally reaching its conclusion, fans have made clear they aren’t willing to wait for wide release to see it first.
That eagerness reached a fever pitch this week when tickets for a special preview screening went on sale in the UK. BFI IMAX confirmed that its December 15 preview screening would be presented in IMAX 70mm, offering fans a chance to see the film on the country’s biggest cinema screen days ahead of the official December 18 nationwide release.
Demand for those tickets proved overwhelming almost immediately. More than 100,000 people reportedly joined the virtual queue for ‘Dune: Part Three’ preview tickets at BFI IMAX, a crush of traffic significant enough to overload ticketing systems in a way that echoed the chaos seen when ‘The Odyssey’ IMAX tickets went on sale earlier this year.
The BFI IMAX screening isn’t an isolated event, either. It’s part of a broader nationwide preview rollout across UK cinemas, all scheduled for December 15, three days ahead of the film’s wider theatrical opening, with formats and individual showtimes varying by venue depending on location.
Globally, the film’s IMAX 70mm footprint remains extremely limited by design, with only 36 locations worldwide currently confirmed to offer that specific format, including 25 theaters in the United States, nine in Canada, one in the United Kingdom, and one in Australia. That scarcity has only intensified the rush for tickets, since fans hoping to catch the film on the largest possible screen have very few opportunities to do so.
‘Dune: Part Three‘ picks up the saga following the events of ‘Dune: Part Two,’ continuing Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novels with the director once again returning to the deserts of Arrakis. The film is based on Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah,’ bringing Villeneuve’s take on Paul Atreides’ story to its conclusion.
The returning cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach De Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem, reuniting much of the ensemble that helped make the first two installments into global box office phenomena. Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay alongside Brian K. Vaughan, continuing their collaboration from the earlier films.
Villeneuve has built a reputation for shooting his ‘Dune’ films specifically to be experienced in IMAX, and that approach has consistently driven fans toward premium format screenings over standard theatrical showings. The runtime for ‘Part Three’ is expected to land around 140 minutes, which would make it the shortest installment in the trilogy so far, though that figure has not been officially confirmed.
Given how quickly IMAX 70mm engagements have historically sold out for this franchise, and how badly fans clearly want an early look at the trilogy’s finale, it’s not entirely surprising that ticketing infrastructure buckled under the pressure. The scramble mirrors similar demand surges the format has seen throughout the year, reinforcing just how central IMAX has become to the way audiences want to experience this particular story.
With preview screenings locked in for mid-December and the film’s official release following just days later, ‘Dune: Part Three’ looks set to be one of the most anticipated theatrical events of the holiday season. Fans who missed out on this initial ticket rush will likely be watching closely as more screenings and formats become available in the lead-up to the film’s December 18 debut.
