Ruaridh Mollica Opens up About Whether Tommy Maximoff’s Bisexuality Will Be Explored in ‘VisionQuest’

Marvel’s Westview trilogy has spent years quietly expanding what its street-level corner of the MCU is willing to explore, tackling grief, identity, and family trauma in ways few other franchise entries have attempted. As the story moves toward its third and final chapter, that willingness to dig into deeper personal territory appears to be continuing.

That territory now extends to Tommy Maximoff, the speedster son of Wanda Maximoff and Vision who’s set to return as a grown adult in ‘VisionQuest.‘ Ruaridh Mollica takes on the role, playing a character now going by the name Thomas Shepherd after his soul was placed into a new body during the events of ‘Agatha All Along.’

In a new interview with SFX Magazine, Mollica was asked directly whether Tommy’s bisexuality, an element of the character established in Marvel Comics, would be explicitly addressed within the series. The actor, who identifies as bisexual himself, explained that while he isn’t certain the show will reference it outright, he hopes his own identity as a bisexual actor naturally comes through in how he embodies Tommy’s personality and sense of self, with room for that part of the character to be explored further down the line.

In Marvel Comics, Tommy Maximoff eventually takes on the superhero identity Speed, developing powers similar to his father’s connection to Wanda’s own family lineage. His twin brother Billy, known in the comics as Wiccan and played in the MCU by Joe Locke, had his own sexuality left largely unaddressed on screen during ‘Agatha All Along,’ despite the character’s queerness being fairly evident to longtime comic readers.

That pattern of leaving certain identity details implied rather than stated outright appears to extend to Tommy as well, at least based on Mollica’s comments. Given how carefully Marvel has handled these characters’ returns across multiple series, any decision about how explicitly to address Tommy’s sexuality likely carries weight for a fanbase that’s been closely tracking the Maximoff family’s ongoing story.

Alongside the interview, new images surfaced showing Mollica alongside Lauren Morais, who plays Lisa Molinari, a character described as having a close personal connection to Tommy within the series. In Marvel Comics, Lisa is known by the alias Coat of Arms, though it remains unclear how much of that lineage the show will incorporate.

Their dynamic is expected to unfold as Tommy becomes entangled in Vision’s own storyline, particularly once a bounty hunter named Paladin, played by Todd Stashwick, forces White Vision to go on the run. With both Tommy and Lisa positioned as key figures in that unfolding plot, their relationship looks poised to carry real weight throughout the season.

Mollica’s comments add another layer of anticipation to a series already carrying significant expectations as the conclusion of the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision.’ Whether or not Tommy’s bisexuality receives direct on-screen acknowledgment, Mollica’s remarks suggest the show’s creative team is at least conscious of the character’s broader comic book context and open to letting that identity inform the performance.

With ‘VisionQuest’ premiering on Disney+ on October 14, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see how Tommy’s story, and his relationship with Lisa, actually plays out on screen.
