‘American Horror Story: 13’ Just Gave Fans Their Best Look Yet at Evan Peters’ Terrifying Return as Tate Langdon

‘American Horror Story‘ has built its entire identity on reinvention, with each new season typically introducing a fresh cast of characters trapped in a brand-new nightmare. That formula has kept the anthology feeling unpredictable for over a decade, but its upcoming thirteenth season is taking a dramatically different approach.

Rather than starting from scratch, ‘American Horror Story: 13’ is bringing together some of the franchise’s most iconic characters and actors for what’s being treated as a genuine crossover event. With the season’s September 24 premiere on FX and Hulu drawing closer, fans have gotten steady drops of new footage and images teasing exactly how ambitious this reunion really is.

The latest wave of that rollout arrived through an exclusive set of first-look images shared by ScreenRant, giving fans their clearest glimpse yet at ten new and returning characters heading into the season. Among the most striking reveals is Evan Peters back in the Rubber Man suit as Tate Langdon, the fan-favorite villain from ‘Murder House’ and ‘Apocalypse,’ marking one of the most anticipated returns of the entire season.

Peters isn’t stopping there, either. The same set of images also shows him back as James Patrick March, the piano-playing killer from ‘Hotel,’ confirming that the actor is reprising several of his most memorable roles across a single season. Kai Anderson, Peters’ villain from ‘Cult,’ can also be spotted lurking in the background of an image featuring Billie Lourd, who is returning as both Winter Anderson from ‘Cult’ and Mallory from ‘Apocalypse.’

That kind of layered casting has become the defining feature of this season’s marketing. According to the exclusive images, other franchise veterans appear scattered throughout the background of various shots, including Jamie Brewer, who’s confirmed to return as Addie Langdon from ‘Murder House,’ even as her appearance in one particular image bears a striking resemblance to Nan, her character from ‘Coven’ and ‘Apocalypse.’

New and newer faces are joining the reunion as well, with Avantika appearing as Ophelia, Alex Consani as Morwenna, Leslie Grossman reprising Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt, John Waters stepping into the role of Mr. Phibes, Madelaine Petsch appearing as Kira, and Orlando Jones returning as Papa Legba.

Ryan Murphy has been direct about why he wanted this season to function as a celebration of the franchise’s villains rather than a revisit of any single storyline. “I didn’t want to just do a Coven reboot,” Murphy told Vogue. “I was very interested in the greatest villains we’ve done.”

That ambition extends well beyond Peters’ multiple roles. Sarah Paulson is reportedly playing six different characters across the season, while Jessica Lange is reprising all four of her iconic roles spanning the show’s earliest seasons, marking her first full-season return since departing the franchise following ‘Freak Show’ in 2015.

Lange’s involvement carries particular weight given her history with the series. She only briefly returned for a small guest appearance in 2018’s ‘Apocalypse,’ and Murphy has indicated he may not have moved forward with this crossover season at all had Lange turned down the opportunity to come back.

With so many actors juggling multiple past roles and so many storylines converging into a single thirteen-episode season, ‘AHS: 13’ is shaping up to be one of the most structurally ambitious entries the anthology has ever attempted. Whether it can juggle that scale without losing the character-driven horror the franchise built its reputation on remains the biggest open question heading into premiere night.

For longtime fans who’ve followed every twisted iteration of this universe, seeing Tate Langdon back in that iconic mask alone might be enough to make this the season’s most anticipated moment.
