Henry Cavill and Kevin Hart’s Unlikely Spy Comedy Just Got Its First Behind-the-Scenes Look

Henry Cavill has built a reputation for gravitas-heavy roles, from Superman’s cape to Geralt’s swords, while Kevin Hart has carved out his own lane as one of Hollywood’s most reliable comedic leads. Pairing the two together sounds almost like a fan-made mashup, but Netflix is making it very real with its upcoming spy comedy.

That project, known as ‘Spy Duo,’ has been in development for months, first announced back in May with McG attached to direct. Since then, details have steadily trickled out about the film’s premise, cast, and production timeline, building anticipation for what’s shaping up to be one of Netflix’s more unconventional buddy comedies.

Now, fans have gotten their very first behind-the-scenes look at Cavill and Hart together on set, with new photos capturing the pair filming on location in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. The images show Cavill dressed in an all-black ensemble with a suede jacket, seated on a red Triumph motorcycle, while Hart sports a far more casual look in a Joy Division t-shirt and plaid pajama pants, nodding to the domestic side of his character’s double life.

Production officially kicked off on August 31, and according to current scheduling, filming will run through the fall before wrapping just ahead of Thanksgiving on November 23. Shooting locations are split between New Jersey and France, giving the production an international scope that fits its espionage premise.

The film follows Cavill and Hart as rival spies whose secret double lives collide after their pregnant wives strike up a friendship in a Lamaze class. Forced into an uneasy alliance, the two men have to become reluctant partners navigating both fatherhood and their increasingly dangerous, overlapping missions, a premise that leans hard into contrast between Cavill’s polished action-star persona and Hart’s comedic energy.

Rounding out the cast are Jason Isaacs, Justine Lupe, and Aja Naomi King, adding some serious dramatic weight alongside the film’s central comedic duo. The screenplay comes from a stacked group of writers, including Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux, known for their work on ‘Bob’s Burgers’ and ‘The Great North,’ along with Adam and Aaron Nee of ‘Masters of the Universe,’ and Jonathan Tropper, who previously wrote ‘The Adam Project.’

Behind the camera, McG brings a résumé that includes ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and ‘The Babysitter,’ giving the project a director well-versed in blending action with comedic tone. The producing lineup is equally stacked, featuring Kevin Hart’s own Hartbeat banner, Ryan Reynolds through Maximum Effort, and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment, the team behind recent action-comedy hits like ‘Free Guy’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Interestingly, set signage spotted during filming reportedly displayed the working title “The Serpent and the Snake,” alongside artwork showing two silhouetted spies with guns drawn, though it remains unclear whether that’s simply a production code name or a potential alternate title for the finished film.

With filming still in its early stages and no official release date confirmed yet, ‘Spy Duo’ is widely expected to land on Netflix sometime in the latter half of 2027. Given the pedigree behind both the cast and the creative team involved, expectations are already building for a genuinely fun action-comedy pairing that plays against type for both of its leads.

For Cavill, the project adds another notch to an increasingly eclectic slate that already includes ‘Voltron,’ ‘Highlander,’ and ‘The Rosie Project,’ proving he’s far from limiting himself to just heroic, sword-wielding roles. For Hart, it offers a fresh comedic partner after years of frequent collaborations with Dwayne Johnson.
