Marvel Studios has spent months turning Latveria into the hottest piece of real estate in the MCU. With Robert Downey Jr. returning not as Iron Man but as Doctor Doom, the marketing for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been unusually focused on the villain and the kingdom he rules.

That strategy has produced a steady drip of imagery, from Doom-only posters to a first full trailer that introduced the character without answering the film’s biggest questions. Each new piece of art tends to set off another round of fan analysis, and the secondary players around Doom have become a story of their own.

Chief among them are the Latverian Witches, who have kept the fandom guessing since Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con booth showed off their costumes in July. Now a new promo poster has put them back in the spotlight alongside a figure called Boris.

The new artwork places Boris in dark armor at the front of the frame, with 3 hooded witches standing behind him in a misty forest. A lightning-struck sigil crackles in the sky overhead, and a skull sits at the bottom edge of the image, giving the whole piece a gothic, occult feel.

It arrives alongside another promo image that pairs Doctor Doom with Boris and the witches, part of a fresh batch of promotional art that also spotlights the Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. One detail has fans talking: Boris appears to make a “Shh” gesture in the new material, which some are reading as a clue about who is hiding beneath the mask.

Marvel has not said who Boris is, and the poster doesn’t offer any answers. For now, he remains one of the most intriguing unannounced characters tied to the film.

The witches first appeared as costumes at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con booth in July, and a Comic-Con Málaga poster on Oct. 3 then showed Doom in front of 3 masked witches. Marvel has not named them or explained their role in the story, and the masks keep any performers hidden.

That silence has fueled endless speculation. Fan theories have ranged from Wanda Maximoff to unknown characters created for the MCU, and a leak in August claimed the witches could be Clea, Sylvie and Scarlet Witch, though outlets urged caution given how convincing AI edits have become.

A later report on Oct. 7 claimed the actresses beneath the masks had finally been identified, but it remains unconfirmed. Until Marvel says otherwise, every name attached to the witches is a rumor.

Boris has become a theory magnet in his own right. Leaked images in August reportedly showed a third eye on his mask, which led some fans to link him to Doctor Strange, and one popular rumor casts him as Doom’s most loyal acolyte.

Marvel hasn’t confirmed any of it. The “Shh” gesture in the new poster feeds that mystery, because it plays like a deliberate wink at the audience, and the gothic styling of the art suggests Doom’s circle will lean heavily on sorcery as well as science.

It is also worth remembering that this is promotional art, not a cast announcement. The image tells fans where Boris and the witches sit in Doom’s inner circle, but it doesn’t say who they are.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on Dec. 18, 2026. It was originally dated for May 2026 before Marvel pushed it back, which is why it now anchors the end of the year.

Doom’s army-building extends beyond the posters. One of the new post-credits scenes in ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ shows the ruler of Latveria appearing to recruit Bruce Banner, while the Russo brothers have teased Latveria with a symbol shared on social media.

The film features one of the largest ensembles Marvel has ever assembled, with Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell and Pedro Pascal among the names in the cast. With the release date drawing closer, expect Marvel to keep teasing Latveria in ever more cryptic ways.

Who do you think is hiding behind Boris's mask in Avengers: Doomsday?
