Stephen King Just Gave His Official Verdict on Mike Flanagan’s New ‘Carrie’ Series, and It’s About as Good as It Gets

Stephen King has never been shy about weighing in on adaptations of his own work, and his opinions on those projects carry serious weight given just how many versions of his stories have made it to screen. With less than a month to go before Mike Flanagan’s take on one of King’s most iconic novels finally arrives, fans have been eagerly waiting to hear what the author himself thinks.

That new adaptation is ‘Carrie,’ Flanagan’s eight-episode limited series reimagining King’s 1974 debut novel for Prime Video, marking the story’s first-ever full television adaptation following the 1976 film and its later remakes. Flanagan directs four of the eight episodes himself and executive produces alongside King, with Amazon MGM Studios handling production.

Now, with the show’s October 7 premiere fast approaching, King finally weighed in with his official verdict, and it’s about as glowing as an author’s endorsement can get. Taking to his Threads account, King wrote, “Mike Flanagan’s version of CARRIE is brilliant. What it has to say about social media is shocking and true.”

That reaction is especially notable given how protective King has historically been over Carrie White’s story. According to earlier reporting, when Flanagan first approached King about adapting the novel, the author initially pushed back, telling him, “She’s good, she’s done.” Winning King over required Flanagan to convince him there was genuinely new ground left to explore.

That new ground turned out to be social media itself, a modern lens King specifically singled out in his praise. Flanagan’s version reimagines Carrie’s infamous locker-room bullying scene and subsequent public humiliation as something amplified by smartphones and viral posts, transforming a story rooted in 1970s high school cruelty into something that speaks directly to how teenage bullying operates today.

That shift has already shaped much of the show’s marketing and early buzz. The official teaser trailer, which debuted during Prime Video’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, leaned heavily into that modernized angle, showing glimpses of Carrie’s public humiliation being filmed and shared online rather than simply witnessed in person.

Summer H. Howell leads the cast as Carrie White, a role she landed after an extensive search that saw nearly 1,500 actors read for the part. Notably, Howell hadn’t watched Brian De Palma’s original film or read King’s novel before being cast, and Flanagan reportedly encouraged her to avoid chasing Sissy Spacek’s Oscar-nominated performance once she officially joined the project.

She’s joined by Samantha Sloyan as Carrie’s fiercely protective mother, Margaret White, alongside a cast that includes Siena Agudong, Josie Totah, Amber Midthunder, and frequent Flanagan collaborator Matthew Lillard. All eight episodes will release simultaneously on October 7, giving audiences the chance to binge the full story rather than wait through a weekly rollout, with the series also set for an early screening at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its global Prime Video debut.

Given King’s track record of being notoriously candid about adaptations he doesn’t love, this level of enthusiasm speaks volumes about how confident Flanagan’s take on the material really is. For a director who’s already built a reputation as one of King’s most trusted collaborators through projects like ‘Gerald’s Game’ and ‘Doctor Sleep,’ securing this kind of public endorsement ahead of release only raises expectations further.

With King’s seal of approval now locked in and the premiere just weeks away, all that’s left is for audiences to see whether Flanagan’s modernized ‘Carrie’ lives up to the hype surrounding it.
