Nostalgia for ’90s cult classics has become a genuine currency in Hollywood casting decisions, with studios and independent producers alike leaning into reunions that promise to reignite chemistry audiences fell in love with decades earlier. Few pairings carry quite the same built in goodwill as two stars whose careers were launched by the same genre defining sci-fi war film.

That film is Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 cult classic ‘Starship Troopers,’ which turned Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien into recognizable faces of ’90s action cinema alongside co-stars Dina Meyer, Jake Busey and Neil Patrick Harris. Richards and Van Dien have crossed paths at fan conventions and cast reunions in the years since, but their onscreen partnership has remained frozen in time until now.

That drought is officially over. Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien are teaming up on screen for the first time since ‘Starship Troopers,’ having recently wrapped filming in Hamilton, Ontario on the thriller ‘No Free Lunch,’ according to Deadline.

The film marks the third project in the Horizon Line and March On Productions slate, joining previously announced titles ‘Silent Nightfall,’ starring Stana Katic, Elisha Cuthbert and Talia Asseraf, and ‘Greatest Actress,’ featuring Mena Suvari and C. Thomas Howell. Richards and Van Dien are stepping into roles as detectives and FBI agents racing against time to solve a harrowing kidnapping case.

According to the official synopsis, ‘No Free Lunch’ follows a mother and daughter, played by Arcadia Kendal and Lara Daans, who fight for their lives after a college drop off turns into a nightmare. The pair are abducted by a deranged former surgeon, played by Sebastian Pigott, who is obsessed with fulfilling a promise to his late mother and forces the two women through a series of sadistic games as he plots to marry one of them before Richards and Van Dien’s characters can track him down.

The supporting cast also includes Annie Malee, rounding out an ensemble built to carry the film’s thriller premise through its escalating stakes. Damian Lee directs the project from a script he co-wrote with Larissa Laskin, with Bennet De Brabandere of Horizon Line producing and Richard Salvatore of March On serving as executive producer.

Maurizio Guarini is composing the film’s score, while Raf Strupinski handled cinematography during production. Roman Kopelevich of Red Sea Media is managing international distribution and is expected to meet with buyers at the TIFF market, while Quiver Distribution is handling the film’s domestic sales.

‘No Free Lunch’ is currently slated for release in spring of 2027, giving fans of the original ‘Starship Troopers’ plenty of time to anticipate seeing Richards and Van Dien share the screen again after nearly three decades apart. Given how much affection still surrounds their original film, this reunion arrives with a built in audience eager to see how their dynamic has evolved since their sci-fi days together.
