That history made this week’s tabloid reports, which claimed Kimmel was planning to walk away from his ABC show once his current contract expires in May, feel especially plausible to some observers. Those reports turned out to be false, as Kimmel is now in talks to renew his deal to continue hosting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ for another year, according to details confirmed by Deadline.

Kimmel and Disney are actively negotiating the terms of that extension, with Debra O’Connell, chair of Disney Entertainment Television, reportedly asking the show to make budget cuts as part of any renewal agreement. That request lines up with a broader cost-cutting push across Disney’s television division, which has included layoffs, executive early-retirement offers, and an expected restructuring under O’Connell’s leadership.

The economics behind these negotiations paint a fairly stark picture of where late-night television currently stands. According to ad-tracking firm Guideline, total late-night TV ad spending fell from $519.7 million in 2017 to just $209 million in 2025, with ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ accounting for $51.1 million of that total spend in 2024 alone.

That financial squeeze has already reshaped the entire late-night landscape well beyond Kimmel’s own show. CBS canceled ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ entirely, while ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ has faced its own rounds of cuts, including the elimination of its house band and extended production breaks designed to trim costs.

Kimmel’s program moved from a standard three-year contract to a one-year deal back in 2025, a shift that reflected both his long tenure in the role and the increasingly precarious economics facing the entire late-night format. Despite those financial headwinds, Kimmel’s show has reportedly seen a ratings boost since Colbert’s departure from the CBS schedule, giving him a stronger negotiating position than the broader industry trends might suggest.

Adding an interesting wrinkle to the timing of these talks, Kimmel recently announced that Stephen Colbert will appear on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on September 15, marking Colbert’s first late-night appearance since ‘The Late Show’ ended earlier this year. Kimmel had previously offered Colbert the chance to guest-host his own program following the cancellation, though Colbert declined at the time, saying the timing felt premature.

That reunion arrives just as Kimmel’s own future at ABC hangs in the balance, giving the appearance an added layer of significance for anyone following the late-night industry’s ongoing contraction. With one of Colbert’s most direct peers now negotiating his own path forward, the conversation around Kimmel’s renewal has taken on something of a symbolic weight for the format as a whole.
