A New Updated Shot of Cyclops in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Puts James Marsden’s Visor Under the Microscope
Few costumes carry as much baggage as Cyclops’ visor. For the original ‘X-Men’ films, it was a pair of red-tinted sunglasses that kept his optic blasts in check, and it became one of the most recognizable accessories in superhero movies. Now that the X-Men are crossing over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the visor is getting a redesign, and fans are watching every frame for details.
James Marsden first played Scott Summers in ‘X-Men’ in 2000, then in ‘X2: X-Men United’ and ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, where his character died. He returned briefly in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ in 2014, his last appearance before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. After more than a decade, his return has been one of the most anticipated parts of the film.
That anticipation has just been renewed by a new updated shot of Cyclops from the film. Two side-by-side frames show a bloodied, battle-weary Marsden in his blue-and-yellow suit, but with a visible difference. In the earlier version, the visor shows a plain golden band, while the updated frame appears to add a red stripe across the lens, closer to the glow fans expect from the character.

Cyclops made his MCU debut in the third ‘Doomsday‘ teaser, released on January 6. The minute-long clip opened with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto reuniting over a game of chess, discussing death. It then cut to Marsden’s Cyclops tearing off his visor in the ruins of the X-Mansion and unleashing a huge red optic blast.
The teaser ended with a title card promising that the X-Men will return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. It also showed Cyclops in a comic-accurate blue-and-yellow uniform, a big shift from the black leather suits of the original films. The visor in that first look appeared silver with a red tint, and The Direct noted that it resembled the silver-and-red glasses he wore in ‘Days of Future Past’.
The costume has been on public display since San Diego Comic-Con, where the full suit appeared at the Marvel booth. Marsden has been candid about its one drawback. He told ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ that wearing the suit felt very cool and made him feel very proud, until he put on the visor, which he could not see through properly.
He explained that there are a few visor variations, including one that lights up and another that allows slightly better visibility. That might explain why the production has been refining the look, and it could be why the newer frame has a different glow. Marsden also recalled that his tight leather suit in the original films caused on-set mishaps, including tripping over a retaining wall next to Hugh Jackman.
Cyclops is part of a larger X-Men contingent. Stewart’s Professor X and McKellen’s Magneto are back, along with Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique and Channing Tatum as Gambit. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will be the first time they cross over with the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Marsden has described the return as a nice homecoming to a role that really put him on the map. He told Vanity Fair he was getting a little long in the tooth to put on the superhero costume, a joke that reflects how long he has been away. He has also said he agreed to the film without reading the script first.
There is another visor in the story. Marvel’s promotional material for Doom’s trophy room displays a Cyclops visor among other artifacts, but The Direct noted that it does not seem to be the sunglasses-inspired design Marsden wears in the trailer. That may suggest that the film is not Doom’s first encounter with Cyclops, though that is speculation.
For fans, the visor is more than a prop. It is a symbol of the character’s identity and his struggle to control his power. How the production resolves that design could shape how people see the new Cyclops.

Fans have already praised the casting, with many online comments saying Marsden was perfectly cast and deserved more in the earlier films. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opening on December 18, they will soon see whether Cyclops finally gets the spotlight. For now, even a single updated frame is enough to start a debate.
