‘Michael’ Just Rewrote The Streaming Rulebook For Starz — And the Numbers Prove It
Streaming charts rarely make room for the underdog. Between Netflix’s sprawling subscriber base and Max’s prestige originals, smaller platforms like Starz have historically struggled to crack the weekly conversation, let alone the coveted Nielsen Top 10.
‘Michael,’ the Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael Jackson biopic, has already spent much of 2026 rewriting box office history. Fueled by Jaafar Jackson’s acting debut as his late uncle, the film became the first biopic in history to cross $1 billion at the global box office, a milestone that put it ahead of both ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ in the record books.
Now the film is making noise off the big screen too. According to data shared by industry tracker Luca Sofri’s Netflix & Chiffres account, ‘Michael’ became the first film released exclusively on Starz to enter a weekly Nielsen Top 10, pulling in roughly 2.2 million “views” during its first seven days available in the US. The breakdown, sourced from Nielsen’s Top 10 measurement of CVEs (Content Viewership Estimates), placed ‘Michael’ alongside a lineup of pay-one theatrical titles that had already made the jump to streaming, including ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,’ ‘The Equalizer 3’ and ‘It Ends With Us.’

Separately reported figures back up the milestone. ‘Michael’ became available to stream on Starz on August 10, and the film landed at No. 4 on Nielsen’s weekly movie chart with 275 million viewing minutes, marking the first time a Starz-exclusive title made the rankings. That debut came in a week where Netflix’s ‘The Last House’ held the top spot with 869 million viewing minutes, meaning ‘Michael’ was competing directly against one of the platform’s biggest recent hits and still found a foothold.
The context matters here. As the original post pointed out, Starz only carries around 13 million US subscribers, a fraction of what Netflix or Max can claim, and the streaming premiere landed during what was described as a fairly slow week for films overall. That makes a direct comparison to bigger platforms tricky, but it also underscores just how much built-in demand ‘Michael’ carried into its streaming debut.
That demand has been building since long before the film’s theatrical run began. Back in late 2025, a teaser trailer for ‘Michael’ reportedly racked up over 116 million views within a single day, an early signal of the appetite waiting for the film once it hit theaters.
‘Michael’ opened in April 2026 to a record-smashing $97.2 million domestic debut and $121.6 million international launch, giving it the biggest domestic opening ever for a biopic and the best global start for any music biopic. From there, the film kept climbing, eventually topping ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’s’ worldwide haul and crossing the billion-dollar threshold, a first for any film based on a real person.
Directed by Fuqua and written by John Logan, ‘Michael’ traces the King of Pop’s journey from his early days performing with the Jackson 5 through his rise as a solo icon behind albums like ‘Off the Wall,’ ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad.’ Jaafar Jackson stars in his acting debut, alongside Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson. The film drew a notably divided response from critics, many of whom took issue with its choice to largely sidestep the child sexual abuse allegations that shadowed Michael Jackson’s later life, even as audiences kept showing up in droves.
How did you like 'Michael'?
With Lionsgate reportedly already eyeing at least one follow-up film, ‘Michael’s’ streaming performance on Starz adds another chapter to what has become one of the more unexpected entertainment stories of the year. A theatrical run built on record-breaking numbers has now translated into a genuine first for a network that rarely gets this kind of spotlight, even if the scale of that win comes with some real caveats attached.
