‘The Family Stone’ Sequel Reveals Title, First Poster, and Nearly Its Entire Cast
Few holiday films have built the kind of devoted following that 2005’s ‘The Family Stone‘ has managed over the past two decades. What started as a modestly budgeted ensemble comedy-drama has since become a genuine seasonal staple, the kind of movie that quietly earns a rewatch every December regardless of how many other new Christmas releases hit theaters.
That legacy took on new emotional weight following the death of Diane Keaton in October 2025, whose performance as matriarch Sybil Stone helped anchor the original film’s blend of comedy and quiet grief. Writer-director Thomas Bezucha revealed shortly after her passing that he’d already been developing a sequel script, adding an unexpectedly personal layer to a project that was already being closely watched by longtime fans.
Searchlight Pictures has now officially confirmed that sequel, unveiling both its title and first poster. ‘The Family Stone 2’ will be titled ‘The Families Stone,’ with Rachel McAdams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, and most of the original ensemble set to return.
The full returning cast includes Claire Danes as Julie Morton, Rachel McAdams as Amy Stone, Dermot Mulroney as Everett Stone, Craig T. Nelson as Kelly Stone, Sarah Jessica Parker as Meredith Morton, and Luke Wilson as Ben Stone. Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, and Paul Schneider are also confirmed to reprise their roles, alongside Brian White as Patrick Thomas.
According to Searchlight’s official synopsis, “The Families Stone” picks up twenty years after their mother’s passing, as the Stone family reunites for Christmas only to face the season’s biggest surprise: their father has unexpectedly invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family. That setup directly incorporates Keaton’s absence into the story itself, using Sybil Stone’s death as the emotional backdrop for Kelly Stone’s unexpected new relationship rather than simply writing around the character’s absence.
Mulroney offered fans an early preview of what to expect from the project months before the official announcement, having already read Bezucha’s finished script. He described struggling to fully process the emotional depth of the material, especially in light of losing Keaton, in comments shared in Parade.
Bezucha, who both wrote and directed the original 2005 film, returns in both capacities for the sequel. His filmography since then has been comparatively sparse, including 2011’s poorly received ‘Monte Carlo’ starring Selena Gomez and 2020’s Kevin Costner-led revenge thriller ‘Let Him Go,’ making his return to the Stone family’s world a genuine full-circle moment for the filmmaker.
The original ‘Family Stone’ followed Mulroney’s Everett as he brought his uptight girlfriend Meredith, played by Parker, home to meet his eccentric, close-knit family for Christmas, with Keaton and Nelson playing his parents alongside Wilson, McAdams, Giordano, and Reaser as his siblings. The film grossed $92.9 million worldwide against an $18 million budget, cementing itself as a modest theatrical success that later found even greater cultural staying power through repeat holiday viewings.
Producing the sequel are Michael London and Shannon Gaulding through Groundswell Productions, alongside Parker and Alison Benson for Pretty Matches Productions, giving Parker a hand in shaping the project beyond just her on-screen return. With production reportedly set to begin in New York this fall, the sequel appears to be moving forward at a genuinely fast pace following its official announcement.
Given how much emotional significance this project already carries following Keaton’s passing, “The Families Stone” faces the delicate task of honoring her legacy while still delivering the kind of warm, messy family comedy that made the original such a lasting holiday favorite. With nearly the entire original ensemble back together and a script that’s already moved cast members like Mulroney, fans of the 2005 film have plenty of reason to be optimistic about this long-awaited follow-up.
