‘Lioness’ Season 3 Episode 7 Recap & Ending Explained: Joe Escapes but Refuses to Go Home

Taylor Sheridan’s espionage thriller has spent much of its third season slowly tightening the noose around one central mystery: who actually took Joe McNamara, and why. That tension has carried the show through six increasingly tense episodes, building toward a rescue that always felt like it was just out of reach for the CIA’s titular special ops team.

The kidnapping arc kicked into high gear after Renat handed Joe over to Babat, an Iranian mercenary intent on delivering his own brand of punishment. With Joe’s captors constantly one step ahead and her exact location shifting by the hour, the Lioness team spent the previous episode racing to intercept the aircraft meant to smuggle her out of the country entirely.

That interception finally pays off in episode 7, titled “Kiss the Girls.” With his intended flight plans compromised, Babat is forced to scramble for a new exit route, likely a run toward Mexico, giving American authorities a narrower window to monitor roadways and airstrips for anything suspicious.

That narrowed focus finally catches a break when local Texas police flag Babat’s SUV, which is still carrying Joe alongside a crew of armed foreign operatives, due to suspicious license plates. Once the vehicle is pulled over, Baby instructs Joe to stay silent and threatens her with instant death if she doesn’t comply, but their increasingly suspicious behavior compels the officers to alert their superiors, and that intel quickly reaches the Lioness operatives.

Rather than sitting around waiting for a rescue that might not arrive in time, Joe takes matters into her own hands. Before Cruz and the rest of the team can even arrive on scene, she takes advantage of the resulting confusion to get the drop on her kidnappers and make a desperate run for her life.

That decision sets off a chaotic firefight in the middle of the city streets, pitting underprepared local police against Babat’s heavily armed foreign operatives. Eventually, reinforcements arrive and manage to take down the last of the attackers, allowing Bobby and Cruz to finally catch up to Joe and assure her that she’s safe.

Even with Joe safely recovered, the episode deliberately avoids a clean, celebratory reunion. Her injuries, including a missing toe from her time in captivity, take priority over any immediate homecoming, while her husband Neal continues struggling to keep the truth hidden from their daughters after a tense week spent covering for her sudden absence.

Their eldest daughter Kate never fully buys her father’s excuse that Joe was simply away for work, and her skepticism ultimately proves justified. Rather than walking straight into the house once she arrives, Joe instead calls Neal from just outside, tearfully explaining over the phone that she can’t come home yet.

Joe makes clear she still needs to deal with the people responsible for her abduction before she can safely return to her family, determined not to drag that danger back into their lives. It’s a gut-punch of an ending that reframes what should have been a triumphant rescue into something far more emotionally complicated.

With Joe rescued but the larger conspiracy still unresolved, the biggest lingering question becomes who actually orchestrated her kidnapping in the first place. Meade and her husband break their usual rule against discussing work at home, ultimately weighing the possibility that Ukraine may be tied to the operation, setting up plenty of unfinished business heading into the season’s final stretch.

With only the finale remaining, ‘Lioness’ has positioned itself for an explosive final confrontation rather than a tidy resolution.
