‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’ Debuts to a Perfect Rotten Tomatoes, and Critics Say Mahershala Ali Has Never Been Better

Sometimes the best projects emerge from the ruins of ones that never happened. That’s proven especially true for Mahershala Ali, whose long-gestating Marvel ‘Blade’ reboot collapsed after years of delays, leaving the actor with a year of specialized combat training and no film to actually use it in.

That setback has now paid off in an unexpected way. Ali reunited with ‘Mogul Mowgli’ director Bassam Tariq, who was originally attached to helm ‘Blade’ before exiting the project in 2022, for an entirely different kind of story that’s turning heads on the festival circuit.

The film is ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,’ and it’s currently sitting at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. That kind of unanimous critical response is rare for any film, let alone one that had to earn its reputation without the built-in audience of a major franchise behind it.

Ali stars as Latif, a devoutly religious Muslim hitman whose carefully compartmentalized life unravels after the sudden death of his wife, Khadijah, played by Shakirah DeMesier. Left as the sole parent to three children, including his sharp, questioning teenage daughter Fatiha, played by Adia, his devout ten-year-old son Qadir, played by Jahleel Kamara, and infant daughter Aziza, Latif is forced to confront both his crumbling faith and the dangerous forces closing in around his family.

Critics have been especially vocal about Ali’s work in the film, with reviewers describing his performance as some of the most captivating of his career. Several reviews specifically highlighted the physical precision he brings to the film’s handful of action sequences, crediting his year of training for the abandoned ‘Blade’ project with giving his fight choreography a speed and efficiency that feels genuinely lived-in rather than performative.

Just as notable, though, has been the response to Adia’s performance as Fatiha, with multiple critics calling her a genuine scene-stealer whose emotional intelligence rivals Ali’s own commanding screen presence. The father-daughter dynamic, built around Fatiha’s persistent questioning of Latif’s faith and choices, has emerged as one of the film’s most consistently praised elements.

The supporting cast rounds out an ensemble that includes John Cho as Pastor Hwan, a cowboy hat-wearing Iraq War veteran and Christian fundamentalist leading a gun-obsessed congregation, along with Giancarlo Esposito, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tiffany Boone, and Tramell Tillman. Despite early marketing suggesting an action-heavy thriller in the vein of a Muslim samurai film, several reviews have noted that the story leans far more heavily into quiet, character-driven drama than spectacle.

That tonal choice appears to be working in the film’s favor. Reviews have described it as a brilliant exploration of grief and lost faith, anchored entirely by Ali’s magnetic central performance, with the sparse action serving as punctuation for a much deeper meditation on fatherhood, spirituality, and the weight of sudden loss.

Produced by Two & Two Pictures and distributed through Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures banner, the film is set to open in New York and Los Angeles theaters on September 25 before expanding wider in the following weeks. Given the strength of its festival reception, that rollout strategy suggests the studio is banking on word of mouth to carry the film into a broader release.

For Ali, the film represents a full-circle moment following one of the more publicly frustrating chapters of his career, transforming what could have been wasted preparation into what critics are already calling one of his most fascinating performances yet. Sometimes the project that falls apart clears the path for something even better.
