‘Lanterns’ Star Poorna Jagannathan Explains the ‘Faustian’ Deal Behind Zoe’s Brutal Episode 5 Twist

‘Lanterns‘ spent its opening episodes carefully building Zoe into one of the show’s most magnetic supporting presences, a woman whose calm confidence made her feel like she belonged in every room she walked into. That quality made her instantly compelling to watch, even before the show revealed there was something far stranger going on beneath the surface.

Poorna Jagannathan, who plays Zoe, brought a résumé full of morally complex roles to the part, including her turn in HBO’s ‘The Night Of’ and a very different kind of character on Netflix’s ‘Never Have I Ever.’ That range made her a fitting choice once the show’s fourth episode revealed Zoe was actually the Manhunter, the shapeshifting figure at the center of the season’s central mystery in Rushville.

Jagannathan has now spoken about just how blindsided she was by that reveal herself. In an interview with Variety, she explained that she had absolutely no idea Zoe was the Manhunter until the fourth episode’s script landed in her hands, joking that everyone else saw it coming except her. She added that she was ultimately grateful the twist had been kept from her during casting, since any advance knowledge likely would have made her audition feel mechanical rather than genuine.

That secrecy paid off in how she approached the character once the truth came out, particularly in a flashback showing how completely Zoe has entangled the entire town of Rushville in her survival. Jagannathan described the dynamic as a kind of contract Zoe holds over every resident, one where protecting her own life becomes inseparable from each person’s willingness to protect themselves, calling it a genuinely Faustian bargain that Zoe strikes again and again.

Jagannathan also broke down Zoe’s calculated decision to align herself with John Stewart rather than Hal Jordan once the danger closed in around Rushville. According to the actress, Zoe understood that earning the gratitude and protection of a Green Lantern would function as her ultimate safeguard, and she quickly assessed which of the two men actually represented the stronger long-term ally.

That assessment, Jagannathan explained, wasn’t close. Zoe recognized John as the better protector precisely because she could already see the qualities that would eventually make him the superior Green Lantern, a read on his character that shaped every calculated move she made throughout the episode’s escalating chaos.

That chaos ultimately came to a head by the episode’s conclusion, with Zoe’s carefully constructed web of alliances collapsing as Antaan and his militia closed in on Rushville and John’s own fraught relationship with Hal reached its breaking point. The fallout from Zoe’s unmasking rippled through nearly every major storyline the show had been quietly building across its first four episodes, giving the season’s midpoint a genuine sense of consequence.

For Jagannathan, playing a character built entirely around manipulation and self-preservation offered a fresh challenge after years of roles that leaned in very different emotional directions. Her performance across the episode has already become one of the more talked-about elements of the season, turning what began as a background presence in Rushville into one of ‘Lanterns” most compelling antagonists by the time the mystery finally unraveled.
