‘VisionQuest’ Just Humbled ‘Wonder Man’ and Marvel Fans Can’t Look Away

Marvel’s streaming slate has had a bumpy road lately, so every new Disney+ launch comes with a lot of scrutiny. ‘VisionQuest‘ arrived with the added pressure of closing out a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ in 2021 and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’ in 2024. Now the first-week watch time for the Paul Bettany-led series is in, and the numbers are turning heads.

The series debuted on October 13 in the US with a two-episode premiere, following Vision as he lays low working at a pub in Edinburgh. The eight-episode run is releasing in double-episode drops for its first 3 weeks, with the finale arriving on November 10. Showrunner Terry Matalas leads the production, and viewers have been especially eager to see how it handles the character’s memories and identity.

According to Luminate data, ‘VisionQuest’ racked up more than 639M minutes of watch time in its first week of streaming. That is a strong opening for a show that arrives with no new theatrical tie-in to carry it. It also suggests the audience extended well beyond people who watched every earlier Marvel Disney+ series.

The series debuted at number one on Disney+ in most countries, including the United States, and trended in more than 70 nations. It also hit the top spot in markets such as Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Brazil, Australia and Canada.

For context, other outlets have reported that ‘Wonder Man’ charted for a single week with 618M minutes before dropping off. ‘VisionQuest’ edges past that figure, though the real test is whether it holds its audience. Early trajectory estimates suggest sustained viewer retention rather than a front-loaded surge.

It’s worth being careful with comparisons, though. ‘Agatha All Along’ peaked at 744M viewing minutes on Nielsen’s charts and averaged about 450M minutes a week, but Nielsen and Luminate measure things differently. Nielsen’s data also runs on a delay of about 4 weeks, so a true apples-to-apples look at ‘VisionQuest’ is still a few weeks away.

The viewership is backed by solid reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series sits at 91% on the Tomatometer from 87 reviews, with an 83% Popcornmeter score from more than 500 ratings. One critic called the series a staggering achievement that does right by its characters.

Much of the praise has centered on the performances, particularly James Spader’s return as Ultron for the first time since ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ 11 years ago. Showrunner Matalas and Spader have both said Ultron gets some of the best lines in the series. The cast also includes Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff, along with Emily Hampshire, Orla Brady and James D’Arcy as the AI voices of E.D.I.T.H., F.R.I.D.A.Y. and J.A.R.V.I.S.

Disney+ built its rollout around double-episode drops across the first 3 weeks, which put 6 episodes on the platform in about 2 weeks. That approach appears to have kept ‘VisionQuest’ on the charts instead of letting it vanish after premiere week. It also gave viewers a chunky early chunk of the story before shifting to a more traditional cadence.

The later episodes are also getting bigger. Episode 7 runs 62 minutes and the finale runs 68 minutes, making them the longest MCU TV episodes to date. A final-act expansion like that suggests Marvel sees the series as an event, not filler.

With a strong start and healthy reviews, ‘VisionQuest’ is shaping up to be a successful closer for the trilogy. Bettany has said he will keep playing the character as long as he’s asked, so Vision’s future in the MCU looks open. Whether that means a movie appearance or another series is something Marvel hasn’t revealed.

For now, all eyes are on the November 10 finale and the Nielsen numbers that will arrive in the coming weeks. If the show can hold its audience through the end, it could become one of Marvel Television’s more durable streaming hits.

Do you think VisionQuest will maintain its strong viewership through the Season 1 finale?
