Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ Just Revealed Its Episode Titles, and They’re a Clever Twist on High School

Stephen King adaptations have become something of a specialty for one filmmaker in particular, whose track record with the author’s material has turned nearly every new King project he touches into an instant event. That reputation has only grown heading into this fall, with his latest undertaking tackling one of King’s most iconic stories for the very first time on television.

Mike Flanagan’s take on ‘Carrie‘ has been building anticipation for months now, ever since Amazon officially greenlit the eight-episode series back in April of last year. As the October release date creeps closer, new details about the show have started trickling out at a steady pace, each one adding another layer to how Flanagan plans to reinvent King’s 1974 debut novel.

The latest reveal centers on the episode titles themselves, which lean into the series’ high school setting with a clever structural twist. Rather than standard episode names, each installment is framed as a class period on Carrie White’s schedule at Ewen High School, running through First Period, Foreign Language, Social Studies, Dramatic Arts, Physical Education, Home Economics, Romantic Literature, and AP Physics.

‘Carrie’ marks the first television adaptation of King’s breakthrough novel, following several film versions dating back to the Oscar-nominated 1976 original, along with a 1999 sequel, a 2002 TV movie, and a 2013 remake. Flanagan serves as showrunner, writer, and director on the new series, with King himself joining as an executive producer.

Summer H. Howell leads the cast as Carrie White, a role selected from more than a thousand actors who read for the part. The series follows Carrie as she navigates public high school in the wake of her father’s death, a bullying scandal that fractures her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers that begin reshaping everything around her.

The ensemble surrounding Howell includes Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, a role that reunites him with Flanagan following their earlier collaboration on the King adaptation ‘The Life of Chuck.’ Additional cast members include Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Amber Midthunder, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and Heather Graham.

While Flanagan writes and directs four of the season’s eight episodes, the remaining installments bring in a rotating lineup of directors that includes Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick, and Hiromi Kamata. That structure mirrors the anthology-style directing approach Flanagan has used on previous projects, giving the season a slightly different visual voice from episode to episode while keeping his fingerprints on the story’s opening and closing chapters.

Production on the series took place in Vancouver between June and October of last year, with Prime Video promising a version of ‘Carrie’ that expands the world of King’s original story and brings added depth to its characters. All eight episodes will premiere together on October 7, releasing simultaneously across more than two hundred forty countries and territories worldwide.

With the episode titles now offering a small but telling glimpse into how Flanagan plans to frame Carrie’s descent through her final year of high school, anticipation for the full series only continues building as its release date approaches.
