‘Reacher’ Season 4 Episode 8 Finale Recap & Ending Explained: Does Everyone Make It Out of ‘Cut’ Alive?

‘Reacher‘ has spent its fourth season steadily escalating from a chance subway encounter into a sprawling conspiracy involving government secrets, chemical weapons and a congressman with more to hide than he let on. That slow burn set up the season finale, titled ‘Cut,’ with an enormous amount of ground left to cover in a single episode.

The stakes going into the finale were set by the penultimate episode, ‘Vote for Sampson,’ which ended with Congressman John Sampson tackling a suspected suicide bomber into the Delaware River just before the device detonated. Reacher and his allies entered ‘Cut’ not knowing whether Sampson had survived, and not knowing where the season’s central villains, Lila and Amisha, had gone to ground.

The finale wastes little time confirming the worst. Early in the episode, it becomes clear that Sampson did not survive the blast, having sacrificed himself to stop the bomber from unleashing the chemical weapon at his own fundraiser. That leaves Reacher standing at the scene of yet another crime, now a wanted man forced to flee alongside Detective Tamara Green and Jacob, with no leads on where Lila and Amisha might strike next.

Reacher, Green and Jacob Make Their Final Move

With nowhere else to turn, the trio considers regrouping at Plum’s apartment, reasoning it’s the one place no one would think to look for them. But Reacher realizes Lila and Amisha might have the same idea, which leads the team back to the restaurant the women had used as a hideout earlier in the season, where they discover the remnants of the operation preparing to deploy the weapon before a dark web auction can even take place.

With no time to bring in outside help, Reacher splits the team’s focus. He heads up to draw Lila and Amisha into a direct confrontation while Green and Jacob move to secure the chemical weapon itself. Reacher’s fight with the two women turns brutal, ending with him pushing Amisha out a window, where she appears to die from the fall, and forcing Lila to turn her own syringe weapon against herself after she tries to use it on him.

Meanwhile, Green and Jacob fight through the remaining lab team and race to stop one member from releasing the toxin inside a crowded nightclub, managing to intercept him just in time to save hundreds of bystanders. Just when it seems the threat is fully contained, Reacher exits the building only to find Foster waiting for him, setting up one final twist when Amisha, revealed to still be alive, kills Foster before turning on Reacher herself. Jacob and Green arrive just in time to shoot Amisha down, and Jacob chooses to take her into custody rather than finish her off.

The Ending Explained: A Rare Happy Note for Reacher

The episode closes on an unusually settled note for the show. Reacher wakes up in the hospital recovering from his injuries, surprised to find Green at his side and even more surprised that he isn’t in handcuffs, courtesy of Elspeth Sampson using her influence to protect him and the team from any legal fallout.

Reacher hands the flash drive over to Plum so the full story can finally be published, giving Elspeth the vindication of seeing her husband’s death mean something. Green is cleared of wrongdoing and on her way to a better position on the force, Jacob begins working through his grief, and Elspeth is even considering a run for office to carry on her husband’s platform. True to form, Reacher ends the season the same way he always does, with new clothes, a fresh cheesesteak, and the open road ahead of him.
