‘9-1-1’ Season 10’s First Trailer Teases a Volcano Erupting Right in the Middle of LA

‘9-1-1’ has built its entire identity on throwing its first responders into disasters that feel almost cartoonishly extreme, from tsunamis crashing into the coast to planes falling out of the sky. That reputation for go-big-or-go-home premieres has only grown as the show heads into a milestone new chapter.

Season 10 marks a decade for the ABC procedural, and production kicked off back on July 27 ahead of a Thursday, October 15 premiere at 8/7c. The season also keeps ‘9-1-1’ running in tandem with its spinoff ‘Nashville,’ a pairing that has consistently helped both shows land among the network’s top-performing dramas.

Now the first poster for the new season has arrived, and it wastes no time setting the tone. The artwork shows downtown Los Angeles engulfed by a massive volcanic eruption, with rivers of lava cutting through the city streets and spelling out “9-1-1” in glowing orange, all under the tagline “Welcome to La-Va Land.”

A companion teaser clip backs up just how serious the threat is meant to feel, with one panicked voice crying out, “I’m trapped in a river of lava!” as the camera pans over a darkened city block. Between the poster and the teaser, it’s clear the 118 crew is about to face one of the most visually dramatic emergencies the franchise has ever attempted.

Showrunner Tim Minear has been candid about just how strange the timing turned out to be for this particular storyline, since the season was already mapped around a giant sinkhole before an actual sinkhole opened up on Sunset Boulevard earlier this year. Addressing the eerie coincidence, Minear told TVLine, “It’s not my fault,” before confirming that the sinkhole storyline does indeed escalate into a full volcanic eruption once the season gets underway.

Beyond the disaster itself, Season 10 is expected to dig into several ongoing character threads. Athena steps into a new role as a detective while still finding ways to cross paths with the 118, Buck continues navigating his role fostering Theo, and Eddie is still working through his recovery after being stabbed. Even Matthew Sparks, the former rookie cop fired back in Season 8, returns to the fold in an unfortunate spot given his new city job when the sinkhole and volcano hit.

With Season 9 having left the extended 118 family adjusting to major losses and life changes, Season 10 looks positioned to blend that emotional rebuilding with one of the show’s most ambitious opening disasters yet. Given how well the franchise has fared in the ratings heading into this milestone season, it’s hard to imagine the volcano premiere won’t deliver exactly the kind of spectacle longtime fans have come to expect.
