‘The Traitors’ Just Locked In Its Future With a Major Peacock Renewal

Reality competition television rarely produces a genuine cultural phenomenon, but ‘The Traitors‘ has managed exactly that since debuting on Peacock back in January 2023. Hosted by Alan Cumming inside a castle in the Scottish Highlands, the murder-mystery competition series has spent multiple seasons becoming appointment viewing for fans who can’t get enough of its blend of strategy, paranoia and outright betrayal.

That momentum has only intensified in recent days. The show just won its third consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program at the 2026 Primetime Emmys, beating out competitors like ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race,’ ‘Survivor’ and ‘Top Chef’ to claim the top prize once again. Cumming accepted the award on behalf of the producers, joking that they finally understood what completing a mission on the show actually felt like.

Peacock has now given the franchise even more reason to celebrate, announcing that ‘The Traitors’ has been renewed for three additional seasons. The move cements the show’s status as one of the streamer’s most reliable and consistently successful original productions, ensuring the castle doors will keep opening for years to come.

That kind of long-term commitment reflects just how far the show has come since its early days. The franchise has already collected nine Emmy Awards across categories including competition program, host, directing, casting, cinematography, picture editing and costumes, an unusually broad haul for a reality series still relatively early in its run. Cumming himself has remained the constant thread throughout, continuing to headline the show with his signature blend of theatrical flair and dry wit.

Part of what’s fueling this renewed investment is the franchise’s willingness to evolve. Rather than sticking purely to its celebrity-driven format, the show is expanding with ‘The Traitors: New Blood,’ a civilian spin-off premiering September 17 on NBC that swaps out reality stars and public figures for 22 everyday Americans selected from more than 80,000 applicants.

That new version includes a notably varied cast, featuring participants like a nurse, an astrophysicist and a barrel racer, all chosen to compete in the same high-stakes game of deception that made the original format so popular. Cumming first revealed the civilian spinoff during the inaugural Televerse 2025 conference in Los Angeles, and production on the NBC edition began earlier this year ahead of its fall premiere.

Meanwhile, the traditional celebrity edition of the show isn’t going anywhere either. Season 4 wrapped earlier this year with Rob Rausch winning as a secretly designated Traitor after deceiving runner-up Maura Higgins throughout the competition, and Season 5 is expected to return to Peacock in January, continuing the celebrity format alongside the newly launched civilian version.

With back-to-back Emmy wins, a freshly announced three-season renewal, and a brand-new spinoff format launching within days, ‘The Traitors’ looks positioned to remain one of television’s dominant reality franchises well into the future. Given how consistently the show has managed to reinvent itself while keeping its core format intact, it’s easy to see why Peacock is betting big on its continued success.
