First Look at Hideo Kojima’s ‘Physint’ Reveals ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Actor Bill Skarsgård as Its Star

Hideo Kojima has spent decades building a reputation as one of gaming’s most unpredictable auteurs, and his latest project has already lived through more twists than most games see before release. ‘Physint,’ the designer’s next original IP after the ‘Metal Gear’ and ‘Death Stranding’ franchises, has been shrouded in secrecy since it was first announced back in January 2024 during a PlayStation State of Play presentation.

That secrecy took a dramatic turn just last week, when the project was confirmed to be moving away from PlayStation entirely and landing with Xbox as its new publishing partner instead. For a game Kojima has repeatedly described as the culmination of his career, the publisher switch alone was enough to send fans into a frenzy of speculation about what might come next.

Now fans finally have their answer. During the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 Broadcast, Kojima revealed that Bill Skarsgård will star as the lead in ‘Physint,’ accompanied by the game’s first official visual, a moody, cinematic poster showing Skarsgård alongside co-star Charlee Fraser under the tagline “The Next Cold War Begins.”

Kojima expressed genuine excitement about landing Skarsgård for the role, framing the collaboration as something built on mutual respect between two artists who’ve long admired each other’s work. “I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for ‘Physint’ will be Bill Skarsgård,” Kojima said in a statement shared via Xbox Wire. “We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.”

That confirmation puts to rest months of speculation about who might headline the ambitious action-espionage title. The new teaser visual itself carries an especially personal touch, since Kojima revealed the image uses a photograph he personally took of Skarsgård and Fraser during their costume and camera testing sessions earlier this year.

Skarsgård and Fraser aren’t the only names attached to the project. The newly unveiled key art also credits Don Lee and Minami Hamabe as part of the ensemble, giving fans their first real sense of the scale Kojima is building toward. Kojima has teased that additional casting announcements are still to come, suggesting the full roster for ‘Physint’ is far from finalized.

Skarsgård arrives at the project fresh off a string of high-profile roles, including praised work in Gus Van Sant’s ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ and Michael Sarnoski’s ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ alongside Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer. He’s also set to appear in Peter Berg’s ‘The Mosquito Bowl’ and Andrew Niccol’s ‘Lords of War’ opposite Nicolas Cage, making this a particularly busy stretch for the actor across both film and gaming.

Kojima has consistently framed ‘Physint’ in sweeping terms, describing it as the culmination of more than 40 years of his career and a project designed to redefine the action-espionage genre without being bound by existing conventions in digital entertainment. According to Kojima Productions, the game marks the studio’s third original IP, following ‘Death Stranding’ and the currently in-development horror title ‘OD.’

Speaking of ‘OD,’ Kojima also used the Tokyo Game Show segment to provide an update on that project, confirming that performance capture and ADR recording, which had been paused during the SAG-AFTRA strike, resumed earlier this year and that production remains on schedule. He praised stars Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer for delivering performances he called intense and outstanding, describing ‘OD’ as a project that tests the thresholds of fear.

With Skarsgård now confirmed and a striking first visual finally in hand, ‘Physint’ has taken its most concrete step yet toward becoming a reality after years of near-total secrecy. Given Kojima’s track record for slow, deliberate reveals, fans should expect the details to keep trickling out gradually rather than all at once.
