‘Dark Matter’ Season 2 Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: Daniela Finally Reaches Her Breaking Point
Every version of Jason Dessen in ‘Dark Matter‘ seems to be chasing the same impossible thing: a version of his life where the multiverse just leaves him alone. Apple TV+’s sci-fi thriller has spent Season 2 scattering its characters across timelines, each one hoping the next reality will finally feel like home.
Episode 4, titled “Stars, Hide Your Fires,” slows the pace down considerably compared to the frantic dimension-hopping of the previous installment. Instead of piling on new worlds, the hour lingers with the characters already in motion, letting the emotional wreckage of the season catch up with them.
That patience pays off by the episode’s final act, when Daniela finally tells Jason she’s done. After weeks of watching him spiral deeper into his obsession with the Box, she reaches the one conclusion the show has been building toward all season: she cannot keep trying to pull him back from something he refuses to let go of.
The episode opens by circling back to Leighton, who spent last week’s installment bouncing between realities after fleeing a hospital. Here, his path finally leads him into the Box and back to Jason’s low-tech world, where he tracks Jason down after watching him flee campus once he realizes the Box has resurfaced. Jason confronts Leighton directly and tells him to leave this reality for good, and for now, it seems Leighton listens.
Elsewhere, Ryan, Amanda, and an alternate Jason known as Jason2 are trying to get the original Ryan back to his home world. They stop for a drink along the way, and that detour produces one of the episode’s strongest scenes: a blunt, overdue conversation between Jason2 and Amanda about the selfish choices he made trying to steal a version of a life that was never his. Amanda does not hold back, and under the weight of her honesty, Jason2 finally admits his own failings rather than deflecting them.
With the original Ryan safely returned, Jason2 asks to borrow a set of lilac wings, hinting at some unspecified good deed he intends to carry out, though the episode never clarifies what that plan actually involves. Ryan and Amanda, meanwhile, do not fare nearly as well. They believe they have made it back to their own world, only to find something is off, and they are quickly arrested at gunpoint by masked guards for breaking quarantine and curfew.
The heavier emotional weight of the episode, though, belongs to Jason and Daniela. After Charlie makes clear he has had enough of uprooting his life every few episodes, the family abandons the idea of relocating again and instead tries to settle into an uneasy version of normal life. Charlie lands a job alongside a friend named Eduardo, this reality’s version of Amanda’s son, and the two are soon preparing to head off to college together.
For Jason and Daniela, that stability proves much harder to fake. Daniela gets recognized at an art gallery and later becomes convinced she has spotted a familiar Jason nearby, while Jason has a nearly identical moment of mistaken recognition outside the bar where he works. Neither turns out to be who they think, and neither tells the other what happened, but the near-misses underline just how unsettled they both remain.

Once Charlie moves out for college, whatever fragile balance the couple had built starts to unravel. Daniela spends her time on long runs, replaying everything the family has survived, and even tracks down her father’s old store to wonder whether some version of him might still be alive in this world. Jason, for his part, buries himself in entanglement equations, convinced he can find a way to scientifically cut this version of the Box off from the rest of the multiverse entirely.
That obsession is ultimately what breaks them. Daniela realizes Jason will never truly walk away from the Box or accept that there may be no clean way to separate himself from the multiverse for good, and she stops trying to convince him otherwise. By episode’s end, she tells him plainly that they need to separate, closing out the hour on the show’s bleakest note yet for the Dessen marriage.
With ‘Dark Matter’ Season 2 continuing its ten-episode run every Friday through October 30, the fallout from Daniela’s decision looks primed to shape whatever comes next for Jason, especially with Leighton, Jason2, and now Ryan and Amanda all tangled up in fresh complications of their own.
