Grant Gustin Just Reignited Flash Speculation, and Even He Admits the Timing Is a Little Awkward

Few actor-and-superhero pairings feel as permanently linked in fans’ minds as Grant Gustin and The Flash. Even years after wrapping his run as Barry Allen on The CW, Gustin remains the actor Arrowverse fans keep circling back to whenever conversation turns to who could suit up as the Scarlet Speedster next.

That conversation has only gotten louder since James Gunn’s DC Universe began taking shape. Gunn has repeatedly praised Gustin’s take on the character while stopping short of confirming any concrete plans, leaving just enough ambiguity for fans and journalists alike to keep the rumor mill spinning year after year.

Gustin himself has now weighed back in on the topic, addressing the possibility of a DCU return even as he approaches an age that puts him well outside the range typically associated with a freshly cast superhero lead. Despite being 36 years old, Gustin made clear he’d still want the role if it came calling, and added that the appetite for his return doesn’t seem to be his alone, noting how widely shared that particular wish appears to be among fans and industry watchers.

This isn’t a new position for Gustin so much as a continuation of one he’s held since finishing his nine-season run on ‘The Flash’ back in 2023. Not long after the series ended, Gustin responded to a fan asking whether an overture from James Gunn might get him back into the suit, saying he’d do it again and that he trusts Gunn, adding that he loves all of the director’s films.

That trust has come up repeatedly in the years since. At FAN EXPO Denver, when a young fan asked Gustin which role he’d want if Gunn ever cast him in the DCU, he didn’t hesitate before answering with the character’s name outright, a moment that quickly circulated online and reignited the usual wave of fan casting campaigns.

Part of what makes Gustin’s latest comments notable is that he’s openly acknowledging the elephant in the room: he’s no longer the twenty-something who first put on the suit back when ‘The Flash’ launched in 2014. Superhero franchises tend to favor younger leads when rebooting a character, especially one as central to DC’s mythology as the Scarlet Speedster, which makes Gustin’s continued interest as much a statement of loyalty to the role as it is a realistic pitch for casting.

Even so, Gustin’s stance hasn’t wavered, and it’s clear from his comments that he’s aware plenty of fans would welcome him back regardless of the calendar. James Gunn, for his part, has never fully shut the door either, previously noting he’d love to work with Gustin at some point, even while suggesting any future DCU Flash project remains something he and co-CEO Peter Safran are simply keeping an eye on rather than actively developing.

That lingering openness from Gunn is likely a big part of why Gustin keeps getting asked the same question at conventions, on podcasts, and in interviews years after his series ended. It also explains why, whenever he does answer, it tends to generate headlines and fan excitement all over again, regardless of how many times he’s essentially said the same thing before.

For now, there’s still no confirmed Flash project in active development at DC Studios, meaning Gustin’s comments remain speculative rather than a sign of anything imminent. But with the actor continuing to signal he’s ready whenever the call comes, and with fans clearly still hoping for exactly that outcome, the Grant Gustin Flash rumor shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
