‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Still Swinging, and a Record No Movie Has Ever Touched Is Next

Few blockbusters get a second wind at the box office, let alone a long victory lap. The ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ box office run has ignored the usual rules of theatrical decay since it opened on July 31. From a record-shattering launch to a spot near the top of the all-time global chart, Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker has been one milestone stacked on another.

The film opened to $360M domestically, the biggest opening weekend in history, edging out ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $357.1M. It then became the fastest film to reach every domestic milestone from $400M through $900M. On Sept. 16, it passed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ at $936.773M after 47 days, taking the title of highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office.

Now the eighth weekend numbers show the web-slinger still isn’t slowing down. ‘Brand New Day’ grossed $6.5M over the 3-day weekend, a drop of just 22.6% from the previous frame, even after losing 286 theaters on Friday. That pushes its domestic total to $944.5M.

That figure sets up another piece of history. One box office watcher on X pointed out that the film could become the first movie ever to cross $950M in the US as soon as next weekend, with a run near $960M possible. It also ended the weekend in more than 3,000 theaters, which is a luxury for a film in its eighth weekend.

The film’s start was enormous worldwide as well. It collected $932M globally in its opening weekend and passed $1B after just six days. That made it the second-fastest film to hit the mark, behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

It reached $2B after three weekends, again second-fastest behind ‘Endgame,’ which needed 11 days. The film now stands at $2.45B worldwide, ranking third all time behind ‘Avatar’ ($2.92B) and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ($2.72B). That puts it ahead of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ and it is Sony’s highest-grossing film ever on a reported $225M budget.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film picks up four years after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ Peter is now an adult living alone, having erased himself from the memories of the people he loves. He is a full-time Spider-Man in a New York that no longer knows his name, and he faces a strange new pattern of crimes and a surprising physical evolution.

Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal star alongside Holland, and audiences have given the film an A CinemaScore. Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman offered his own theory for the success when he told The Hollywood Reporter that “the theatrical audience demands greatness.” He was responding to questions about superhero fatigue after other recent releases underperformed.

The results have helped power a record-setting season overall. Summer 2026 is now the highest-grossing summer ever at the global box office with $4.765B, topping the previous record set in 2013.

The next big question is how much further the film can climb. Variety noted that reaching $1B domestically, which no film has ever done, is unlikely at this point without a re-release. Even so, a run that lands in the $950M to $960M range would be another historic mark for a film that has already rewritten much of the record book.

For now, ‘Brand New Day’ keeps holding its ground while newer releases like ‘Resident Evil’ compete for attention. Whether it lands at $950M or beyond, its run has been one of the most remarkable in box office history.
