Hal Jordan & ‘Lanterns’ Just Confirmed Batman Exists in the DCU

Lanterns‘ has spent its first season quietly building out a version of the DC Universe that feels grounded, lived in, and a little bit weary, trading cosmic spectacle for small-town Nebraska grit. The HBO series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and it has largely kept its focus tight on the two Green Lanterns rather than dropping in cameos from the wider superhero roster. That restraint made a specific moment in the show’s sixth episode land even harder for longtime fans paying close attention.

Episode 6 jumps forward roughly a decade in the story, landing in 2026 with Hal freshly out of prison and settled in the town of Rushville. When John comes to check on him, Hal walks him past a battered, graffiti-covered signal device that the town barely uses, and casually explains where the idea came from.

That is the moment ‘Lanterns’ delivered its first clear, spoken acknowledgment of Batman existing somewhere in this universe. Hal tells John that Guy Gardner “ripped off that bat guy over in Gotham, too,” adding that Guy “put a beacon right in the middle of the fucking town here so people can summon him.”

The beacon Hal is describing is a homemade Green Lantern signal that Guy Gardner installed in Rushville as a stand-in for the Bat Signal, meant to let residents call on him when trouble hits. Unlike Commissioner Gordon’s spotlight in Gotham, which the city treats with a kind of civic reverence, Guy’s version has been vandalized and mostly ignored by locals who resent the Lanterns rather than welcome them. John eventually tests the device himself, and it does technically work, summoning Guy after several hours.

The line matters beyond the joke because it is reportedly the first time a live-action DCU project has referenced Batman by name in actual dialogue, rather than through a glimpse of Gotham architecture or an easter egg buried in the background. Batman had previously only shown up in animated form in ‘Creature Commandos’, so hearing another established hero casually confirm his existence in conversation is a different kind of milestone for James Gunn’s still-forming DCU.

It also fits the dry, lived-in humor that has defined ‘Lanterns’ since it premiered, where even a superhero signal gets treated less like a symbol of hope and more like an eyesore nobody asked for. Fans online have been quick to point out how fitting it is that Guy Gardner, a character known in the comics for being blunt, arrogant, and a little bit of a screw-up, would be the one shameless enough to just copy Batman’s whole idea and slap it in the middle of a small town square.

For a show that has mostly kept its world small, the reference is a reminder that ‘Lanterns’ still exists inside a much larger DC map, one where Batman is presumably out there doing his own thing in Gotham while Hal and Guy handle their corner of Nebraska. Whether that beacon ever gets used again before the season ends remains to be seen, but for now it stands as one of the most talked-about needle drops in the show’s run, a scuffed-up, graffiti-tagged tribute to the Dark Knight that nobody in Rushville seems to appreciate quite the way Gotham does.

How excited are you about Batman finally being confirmed in the DCU?
