Ben Affleck Reveals the Real Reason His Ex-Wife Jennifer Garner Isn’t His Leading Lady in ‘Animals’

Ben Affleck has spent the past couple of years quietly building out a directing career that leans into gritty, character-driven crime stories, and his upcoming Netflix thriller ‘Animals’ fits squarely into that lane. The film follows a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped, forcing the couple to scramble for a ransom while old secrets start surfacing under the pressure. Affleck both directs and stars in the project, working from a script he co-wrote alongside Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray.

The cast that ended up in front of the camera includes Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun and Ray Fisher, among others, rounding out a project set for release on Netflix and in select theaters on October 9. What audiences may not realize is how differently that cast list could have looked, and how close the film came to reuniting one of Hollywood’s most talked-about former couples on screen.

According to Affleck, ‘Animals‘ was originally built around his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, playing opposite Matt Damon as the couple at the center of the kidnapping plot. Damon eventually had to step away from the project due to a scheduling conflict tied to ‘The Odyssey,’ which left the lead role open right as production needed to move forward.

Affleck ultimately decided to step into that role himself, and that shift changed everything about whether Garner made sense as his on-screen wife. As Affleck explained, once he was going to be the one playing opposite her, the calculation around casting his real-life ex-wife suddenly looked very different, and Garner herself was the one who raised the concern first.

“I talked to Jen, and she was like, ‘We don’t wanna do that. You just get baggage,'” Affleck said, according to the account shared by Variety. He continued, “I still would wanna work with her in the future, but what you don’t wanna do is take the audience’s baggage and have it work against you, you know?”

That decision ultimately opened the door for Kerry Washington to step into the role instead, giving the film a lead pairing free of any real-world history for audiences to project onto the story. Given the high-profile nature of Affleck and Garner’s marriage, divorce, and co-parenting relationship over the years, it is easy to see why both of them landed on the same conclusion once the dynamic shifted from an ensemble cast to the two of them playing spouses directly opposite each other.

Affleck’s comments also make clear that this was not some quiet falling out or lingering tension between the two, but a practical creative call made together. He was explicit that he would still like to work with Garner again down the line, just not in a scenario where their real relationship risked overshadowing the story the film is trying to tell.

It is a reminder of just how much baggage, to use Affleck’s own words, comes bundled with casting decisions involving actors whose off-screen lives have played out so publicly. For a film built around tension, secrets and a marriage under strain, adding a real-life divorce into the mix might have made the drama feel less like fiction and more like a distraction from it.

‘Animals’ arrives on Netflix and in select theaters on October 9, giving audiences a chance to see how the finished cast handles that same kidnapping thriller premise without the extra layer of real-world history attached.
