Chloe Bennet Is Frustrated Over Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Uncertain MCU Canon Status

Chloe Bennet spent seven years building a corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that fans still talk about a decade later. As Daisy Johnson, also known as Quake, she helped ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ become the first live-action television series to exist under the Marvel Studios banner, running from 2013 to 2020 and threading its storylines directly through the movies around it.

That connection was the whole premise of the show when it launched. Kevin Feige himself framed the series as canon at the time, and its early seasons leaned hard into that promise, tying directly into the fallout of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier.’

In recent years, though, Marvel has quietly walked that framing back, and Bennet has made clear she has not made peace with it. “I’m still low-key angry that they don’t fully acknowledge this as canon, the real followers will understand that,” she said. “We were the first MCU TV show, and we did 130-something hour-long episodes. We spent a lot of time in people’s homes.”

The comment lands as part of a broader pattern of Bennet addressing the subject head-on whenever it comes up. At a Dragon Con panel earlier this year, she told fans flatly that ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is not treated as canon, a statement that drew audible boos from the crowd, before adding that she thinks the show will make “some weird, random comeback” someday.

The show’s exclusion has become one of the more debated retcons in Marvel’s history. ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ ran for roughly 136 episodes across seven seasons, building out its own mythology around Inhumans, time travel, and the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D. itself, all while sitting adjacent to a shifting film universe that eventually moved on without acknowledging most of it. An official Marvel timeline book that omitted the series entirely only reinforced the sense that the show had been left out in the cold.

For Bennet, the frustration does not appear to be about ego. It is about the scale of what the cast and crew built being treated as if it barely happened. Producing well over a hundred episodes of network television tied to a shared cinematic universe was, by any measure, a massive undertaking, and she has been consistent about wanting that work recognized rather than quietly erased.

That has not stopped her from saying she would welcome a way back into the fold. Bennet has said she would “totally” return to the role of Daisy Johnson if Marvel Studios came calling, and she has joked that she is a poor candidate for keeping any such secret quiet if it ever happened. She has also weighed in on ‘Secret Invasion,’ suggesting Daisy could have fit into that series’ story, though she was not asked to appear.

Marvel Studios has not offered an official explanation for why ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ fell out of canon, and the studio has largely let the ambiguity stand rather than clarify it one way or the other. That silence has only fueled more speculation among fans about whether the door could reopen, especially as Marvel continues expanding its television slate across Disney+.

For now, Bennet’s comments read as someone who has made peace with the uncertainty without pretending it does not sting. The show clearly still means something to her, and she is not shy about saying so whenever the subject resurfaces.
