‘Harry Potter’ Star Kit Harington Reveals What Really Happened to Marvel’s Black Knight Plans
Kit Harington’s stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always felt like it was building toward something bigger. His debut as Dane Whitman in 2021’s ‘Eternals‘ ended with a tease that seemed to promise a proper Black Knight arc, complete with a cursed sword and a villain origin waiting to happen.
That teaser scene, in which Dane picks up the Ebony Blade and gets a knowing visit from Mahershala Ali’s Blade, sent fans into speculation mode about a Midnight Sons team-up years before Marvel had even confirmed such a project existed. Harington has stayed vocal about wanting to revisit the character ever since, previously calling the Ebony Blade’s corrupting influence a “brilliant allegory about addiction.”
Now Harington is confirming what many suspected: those Black Knight plans never actually solidified into anything concrete. Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast with Josh Horowitz, the actor explained that Marvel chief Kevin Feige floated the idea early on, recalling Feige telling him, “Look, we’d really love to find something.”
According to Harington, that’s simply how Marvel operates when weighing a character’s future. “They’ll throw a character in and then see if it goes anywhere,” he said, before adding bluntly, “And in the end it didn’t.”
When pressed on whether Marvel ever communicated real plans to pair Black Knight with Ali’s Blade for a Midnight Sons project, Harington didn’t leave much room for interpretation. “No. No. No,” he said, clarifying that “there were all sorts of ideas that might [take shape], but nothing solid ever kind of communicated.”
Despite the dead end, Harington still lights up when talking about where the character could have gone. He’s long been drawn to the psychological weight of the Ebony Blade, a weapon in Marvel comics lore that slowly corrupts its wielder with battle-rage and bloodlust the more it’s used.
“The Ebony Blade is one that he uses and then gets bloodlust, and I think there’s an interesting story of someone going from hero to villain right there,” Harington explained, describing the kind of hero-to-villain descent that rarely gets this much of a built-in metaphor to work with.
‘Eternals’ itself struggled to win over critics and underperformed compared to Marvel’s usual box office standards, which likely played a role in Feige’s team pulling back on any immediate follow-through for its ensemble cast. Dane Whitman has since gone quiet on the MCU release slate, with no announced film or series carrying his story forward.
Still, Harington’s comments suggest the door isn’t necessarily closed for good, just unopened for now. “I do think it could be a fascinating story. But they’ve got so much [to work with],” he said, acknowledging that Marvel’s priorities have shifted toward other corners of its expanding roster since ‘Eternals’ first hit theaters.
For a studio that’s proven willing to revisit dormant characters years later, Black Knight’s cursed blade and unfinished arc remain sitting right there waiting for someone to pick it back up. Whether that ever actually happens is still anyone’s guess.
